Here, here JaneAnne. I was just thinking about this subject this morning. The way I sum up the deniers attitudes is this: You could say that hey, I'm going to die one day anyway, so why exercise and watch my diet? To which I would say, yes, I am going to die too. That's undeniable. But I don't want to spend the last 20 years of my life hooked to a respirator and/or on medication. I want to be able to ENJOY my life as much as possible. Which means being healthy enough TO enjoy it. If we just ignore some of the effects on the environment we are seeing, sure, we'll still have a planet earth, but it won't be a very pleasant one. And is that what life is all about, merely surviving? Me thinks not. Great post and best of luck to you.
Great post JaneAnne! Last night it was 54 degrees here on Long Island. Not the norm by any means. I agree with everything you mentioned here. Even that ski one. I remember back in the 70's where there was this commercial about pollution and you see someone throwing a bag of trash out of their car window and it landed on and Indian's feet and you see a tear coming from his eyes. They knew back then that we would have the problems we are having now. Why doesn't anyone listen?
JaneAnne,
I can understand the sentiment behind it, but there is a lot of things that sound great, but are a bit hypocritical.
If the shift if to preserve the environment, one of the biggest problems for it is is single family construction. because you have to value land first and foremost. Then you will go vertical, as vertical has the least affect on the environment.
It will allow people to live compact, and this means that huge infrustructure will not be needed. Next is the size. Who said that we need 2,500 sq. ft. apartments? Japanese have much smaller. Where is the optimum for it. 500 sq of well organized space, 300 sq. ft. Have you been n a cruise, remember the size of a cabin.
If you cluster residential in high rises, then your insurance will be pennies on the dollar, you would not need all the infrustructure cost, have way less police, firefighters, and what is important - you will not need cars for your everyday living.
People in Manhattan do not have cars.
And this list can go on and on and on. And it will include things that may cause people jump in anger. Like why we are using so much water, showeing at least once a day? People everywhere in the world do not do that. Running water is a huge waste
Yyou can keep that list. The problem is that the minute we need to sacrifice we won't.
JaneAnne: these are enough reasons for all of us to make efforts to go more green.
