Tall Ships, Rhode Island by Karen Hurst

Sunday the Tall Ships paraded around Prudence Island passing by the Jamestown Bridge.

I was lucky enough to have a front row seat on our good friends boat. Starting out on our trip with mimosas for the ride, we set up on the stern with food and drinks, soaking up the sun. Peggy, our hostess, served a muffaretto, which is like an Italian grinder on French bread with a New Orleans dressing. Delicious!

We had left a little early to set anchor in a comfortable spot, from which we had a 360 view of the Jamestown Bridge, Jamestown, Prudence Island, Newport and the Tall Ships as they passed behind the Island and then forwarded on to Newport.. Steve and Karen

We were not close enough to hear the Marching Bands on some of the Tall Ship Decks, but could hear bits of the music drifting over the water. The day was absolutely glorious. When we first arrived, there were not many boats anchoring, but within an hour the bay was absolutely packed! Some boats anchored and some followed along with the Tall Ships. We were a little disappointed that there were not as many real large Ships as we remembered from the last time, but the atmosphere in the bay with all the boats proving once again that Rhode Island is the Ocean State, made it well worth our trip. People along the coast also had set up White party tents and hosted their friends and family for a beautiful afternoon.

A real pleasant way to spend our day.

Narragansett Bay is home to many boaters, both power and sail. Some homes have docks and some have spectacular views. Both vacation and year round homes alike are stunning.

Karen, what a beatuiful part of the country! My hubby and I will soon be taking a cruise out of New Jersey and making our way up the coast to Quebec. I am soooooo looking forward to that experience as I've never been there. We will be stopping at different ports along the way. I just know the country looks different than it does in Arizona!

Karen, ooh I felt I was right there with you! What a wonderful day. I remember the Tall Ships coming in for the Bicentennial I lived in Manhattan at the time and what excitement, what a sight as.they came down the Hudson. Wow....

Karen, I was lucky enough to see tall ships when the visited Newport for the first time many years ago, or at least I believe it was the first time they visited. It would have been in the early 70's. It was a great site to see then and I am sure it was even a better site to see them from a boat as you did.

You may never go back! Are you stopping along the way? I cannot imagine not being near the Coast. It's such a major part of my life.

Ashley, It was the best! I am usually watching boats from the shore. This time I was There!

Cheryl, I agree, the smell of the sea is what really gets me. When I come home after a long day and smell the salt water, it immediately cheers me up.

Hi Jeff, Thanks, we did. We are getting a boat again, this will be our third. They are an inordinate amount of work and take up most of our time and money, but there's such a sense of freedom being out there, it's hard to explain.

Missy, And you should come back someday! RI is small but really has so much to offer, especially if you like the water. Happy 4th

Karen, we're stopping (and doing a tour of some sort) in Boston, in Newport, Rhode Island, in Bar Harbor, Maine, Quebec City, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and n Portland, Maine. Are you anywhere near those areas? Of course, I have no point of reference.

Teri, Newport is where the Tall Ships were! It's on the other side of the bay and I don't get there too much. I have been to Bar Harbor Maine and Portland also. When are you doing the tour? I think you're going to be amazed if you have always been in Arizona! No deserts here.

Really enjoyed the pictures. I was in New York for the Bicentennial (way back then in '76) and saw the Tall Ships then. I'd love to see them again.

You're going on the trip I've been looking at for awhile now. Looking forward to hearing all about it. I want to go during the Fall. I think it's time to schedule it -- maybe not for this Fall because our vacation times are already scheduled but for next Fall.

Karen and Judi: We are going on September 27 to do the fall tour up to Quebec. We are soooo looking forward to it. I've been wanting to do that cruise for quite awhile - it will be a 13 day cruise on the Celebrity. We're excited 'cause that's one way you get away from my phone. We'll be flying into Newark on the Monday, staying I know not where, and then from there board the ship.

Judi, I've also been to San Antonio - that's a beautiful city as well. Though I grew up in Arizona, I lived in Southern California for the other half of my life. I kinda sorta favor the warmer climate.

Teri, I lived in Phoenix/Scottsdale for 7 years. I loved it there and still miss it. Still have a lot of friends there. I need to go visit. But I really want to take the Fall cruise up to Quebec! I also lived in New England -- it's so beautiful in the Fall -- I know you're going to enjoy the vacation -- take lots of phots to share with us.

What a perfect day!! I am not on the water much - inland in Michigan - but am always attracted to the beauty of it and the wide open space - felt like I was there - but jealous I was not. Thanks for sharing. Made me remember a sail boat ride (pretty large boat) on Lake Michigan once and one of the passengers got sick and we had to go back so - I was so disappointed.

Karen - beautiful! I love the Newport area, and Jamestown, too. We have friends that own a home on Jamestown, and we visit Newport periodically. Love the coastline and the Mansions. I've been there twice for conferences, too. We have the Tall Ships - 4 of them - here now. Today is the last day and then they're heading out for the final leg of the 2007 Tall Ships Atlantic Coast Race Series, on their way to Halifax.

I am SO jealous that you were on a boat to see them......I used to be able to go out on boats all summer long....another life. I would love to have a boat. You're right about that incredible feeling of freedom being out on the water. We used to pull away from shore and I could almost feel the stress and work day melting off me......ahhhhhhhhhhh

No worries about hijacking, I'm glad someone was answering while I was away! I have not been out west, well once in 1970 but that probably doesnt count since everything has changed so much.

Monika, I agree, being with friends and having a nice time are some of our high points. Did you see my hubby in the post? He doesnt know I snuck him in there:)

Ann, Glad you enjoyed the post. We had a boat a few years back, actually it was our second boat. Then we had to sell due to financial reasons. I am lucky that we have so many friends with boats including my brother, both power and sail, that I get out there a lot. We are actually getting a boat this summer, so this will put a crunch in my already infrequent posts:) At least you get to see the Tall Ships from land which a lot of people will never get to see at all. We are lucky to be near the Coast!

Lexa, I could not be away from the water. Although I hear that the desert, even when it's hot, does not bother people as much as the heat does here. It does get a little sticky here, like right now!

Karen - I remember watching the tall ships from Castle Hill. It was such a beautiful sight. We had tall ships here in St. Petersburg as well, but it didn't have the drama of Newport - perhaps because there were so many tall ships back then. Glad you were able to enjoy them.

I remember going into Boston to watch the Tall Ships as a child. They were so majestic. Thanks for sharing.

Sharon, Aren't you originally from Newport? There were more ships before, it seems to have dwindled down a bit. But I guess its tough to get them all in the same place at the same time.

Cameron, It was probably real nice to see the Tall Ships in Boston. Boston is so unique. I love going there.

There is one here. I believe it is right on Jamestown Island. My brother has been there by boat, but not sure about the Restrooms. There is Burlingame, in Charlestown, very near the ocean, but not in view and Fishermans, in Point Judith, also near ocean and Galilee, which is where you would leave to take a ferry to Block Island, (which if you have never been there, is a must!) and with some views of a pond. I have actually been to that one (Fishermans) years ago when I was fortunate enough to have a small camper. Now we are boaters, just bought another one, so I don't think my RV dream is coming true this year. Here is the RV website.

That would be fun, two separate ways of traveling to the same destination! An Island! (with a bridge, btw)

Oh Karen, you're killing me! What fun you must be having. Nothing like spending a day on the water and with good friends and precious family. One of my favorite past times is watching boats come and go or sail boat races. Anything with boats and water. I felt like I had been on a mini vacation when I read your post.

Glad you enjoyed it. I agree that a day on the Bay is like a mini vacation. It gets you away from it all because when you are boating, you definitely need to be concentrating on only that. The only problem is my cell phone still works out there:) I also have the advantage of watching the boats from my home. I know I am very lucky and it took me years to get here, but what great feeling it is to get up each morning and look out over the bay with my coffee...:)

There are also campgrounds right on the water in Matunuck, at the Carpenters Beach areas...

The tall ships were great... and last weekend I had the pleasure of some time to go to the Newport Jazz Festival... saw two old time greats, Chico Hamilton, going to be 86 next month, and Dave Brubeck, about the same age, playing with his son's accompanying... Plus the younger generation of course... Marcus Miller, Ron Carter, Josh Redman, and others...

It is Summer in Newport, and in RI altogether... a fabulous time to be in a wonderful scenic place...

Paul, I know where those campground are but I believe they are "handed" down by families through the years. I could be wrong. (I often am:)

Karen, I grew up in Boston and I used to love watching the Tall Ships. We had a summer house in Point Judith and have some great memories of summers at Scarborough Beach, day trips to Newport, and watching tennis matches at the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame.

Diane, I have always lived in RI, however, not where I could "see" the water. This was my dream and I now have it:) Can't imagine living anywhere else. So make it a point to get to the water!

Hi Brian, When are you coming back? Boston is wonderful. I spent many good times there when I was younger. One of my ancestors started the first Inn in Boston called the Three Mariners...in the 1600's, so it has a special connection for me. You must miss Pt. Judith though, great place to summer.

Sounds like a beautiful day. Love your photos! I think we take some of the ships that come to the Baltimore Harbor and the U.S. Naval Academy for granted. This post serves as a reminder to me that we should take the time to smell the roses, or - in this case- smell the salt water! Thank you!

Karen, I can just imagine being in your boat enjoying the ride and the scenery. (Pardon if I don't know the terminology). I've seen navy ships but not tall ships--is there a difference between a sailboat and a tall ship?

Margaret, I guess you and I have similar environments. And yes, we often forget to enjoy it. Labor Day is here and I can't believe how quickly my summer flew by. I was so caught up in "business". I am going to smell the salt water again this weekend:)

Yolanda, Chuckle:) Wow, you need to get out here! Yes there is a big difference. A sailboat can be many sizes, but a Tall ship usually has many masts and the Tall Ships that were here, from all over the world are usually old. (yes, they are also sailboats, but usually are really big and require a lot more deckhands to operate them)
