With good reason, the National Association of Realtors insists that licensees reveiw Equal Opportunity Housing rules/regs with every continuing ed renewal. Beginning with the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which attempted to prohibit any discrimination based on race, but obviously did not succeed, the US government has passed numerous laws that have aimed at achieving fair housing. Certainly, there have been huge successes as well as glaring failures since then.
What strikes me, however, is that in 2009, some so-called "progressive" thinkers still speak of "tolerance" as the goal for racial equality. As a good friend of mine (who happens to be of Carribean descent) put it: "Thank you, but I don't want to be just TOLERATED!"
I could not agree more!! Different races should actually be celebrated - we have so much to gain from one another. All races have uniquely special gifts to offer in terms of culture, food, customs, habits.... Let's look beyond tolerance when it comes to race, and actually embrace one another in 2010. I think it is beyond time to do so!
