On Wednesday evening, I saw a an interview with a time management authority.

There were a number of interesting factors abut this interview...not the least of which was that I had planned a blog post for yesterday dealing with the same topic.

Planning Spontaneous Time (??)

The main thrust of her comments was that for results-focused individuals, it is important to plan some spontaneous time.

I'm not sure how to go about 'planning spontaneous time'...the term seems to be a major oxymoron or contradiction in terms.

I do however like the concept...and prefer the expression 'allow some goof off time'. To me that term is more in keeping with the intent of allowing some unstructured and unplanned activities to happen in and around planned and focused activities.

As some one who enjoys the extremes that we often find in life, I love the feeling of being totally engaged in a the process of working to achieve specific results.

And I love just goofing off almost as much.

For me, it just doesn't get much better than having the intensity of working to achieve specific results together with just goofing off close together. Each seems to feed the other.

Achieving Desired Results...

Yesterday, I was able to experience both the intensity of working to achieve specific results...and just goofing off.

At 8:00 o'clock in the morning, I checked into the hospital for my scheduled cataract surgery, which was scheduled for 10:00.

Both as an informedobserver and as a participant, I experienced one of the most complex and efficient results-oriented processes I have ever seen. eye surgery

For the entire day, two ophthalmologists  would be conducting cataract operations, with each starting on a new patient every 30 minutes, each in his own operating.

What an absolutely incredible display of efficiency, effectiveness and teamwork.

To the casual observer, it must have appeared to be little more than a bunch of people casually waiting and wandering around.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Every single medical professional was focused on getting every single cataract removed and replaced with an implanted lens so that every single patient and his or her hangers on could return to their normal lives.

As for the results, in my case, I remember being taken into the recovery area at 10:00...the exact time at which my surgery was to have started.

At about 10:20, the surgeon did a post-op examination and told me that the vision in the eye on which he had just operated exceeded minimum requirements for a driver's license.

By 10:30 I was ready to leave the hospital. How is that for achieving desired results...and doing it sooner than expected.

...And Goofing Off!!

When I got home, I was tired and hungry (nothing to eat the morning before surgery)...and my newly restored eye was stinging like crazy

sleepingAfter having something to eat, instead of doing what I had planned, I listened to my body and just goofed off. I went to bed...no not a nap...right to bed...and slept.

Ahhhh....how deliciously decadent, tpo go to bed and sleep on a non-holiday Thursday afternoon.

When I woke up a couple of hours later, the stinging had stopped and my vision had cleared to almost normal.

What an amazing day...achieving desired results sooner than expected and enjoying some total goof-off time.

It just doesn't get any better than that.

Many thanks for the best wishes before the surgery...they worked very well. Thank you.

Larry > You are right we all need balance in our lives.

I'm sure it must be wonderful to see without the cataract.

Speedy recovery.

Larry, That was my first thought too; an oxymoron. I had the cataract thing done too. Great; I can see now.

Larry - now that is what I call focused results ... especially when the results exceded minimum driving requirements
