New Movies and Other Events This Weekend in Iowa City & Coralville

It's Friday and time to take a look at new movies and other events in Iowa City and Coralville. This is what caught my eye this weekend December 11 - December 13.

I'll start as I always do with movies.
Two movies to tell you about this weekend. I'll start with the movie that you'd be hard pressed to miss when it comes to TV advertising this week.Welsh Dragon, Welsh Rugby Union Invictus is a Clint Eastwood production starring two stellar actors, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Morgan Freeman plays the newly elected President Nelson Mandela, who joins forces with the Captain of the African Rugby Team in an effort to unite the country after apartheid as they head for the Rugby World Cup in 1995. What better way to unite a country than through sport? We already knew Nelson Mandela is a very smart man and this just proves it! I love the fact that rugby is front and center in this movie. I'm from Wales and rugby is our game...(At least that's what any self respecting Welsh person will tell you!)

The other new movie is bound to be a runaway hit with kids. It's the Walt Disney Studios modern version of the classic The Princess and The Frog. It's set in New Orleans. I've seen the trailer and it definitely is a twist on the original. Funny too. Check out the schedules at the Coral Ridge Mall Cinema in Coralville the  Sycamore Mall Theatre in Iowa City.

Moving onto live entertainment.
The Englert Theatre has landed a real catch this weekend and you can see the Blind Boys of Alabama there on Sunday. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of energy in the room at that show! These are my personal favorites for music this weekend, (that's why they get top slot on my round up).

If you like your country music with dance then the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon is where you want to be on Friday night for Country Dance with DJ Boots. On Saturday you can catch a show with The Vidalias.

The Riverside Casino has more country music for us on Saturday. The Sawyer Brown Country Band will be making sure everyone has a fun time.

The Mill as our poster child for live entertainment has a fun filled weekend lined up as usual. They kick off on Friday with Kris Delmhorst & Jeffrey Foucault. I started with gospel, then country, and now we have folk music... So many choices this weekend in Iowa City. Could it get any better? Yes it could. On Saturday, Kol Shira, Iowa City's own all-women world music band is performing at the Mill. You have to admit, there's plenty of variety when it comes to music this weekend! (Hip Hop fans might not agree, but hey, you can't please everyone all the time!)

Last week was the first time I included sports events in my round up of things to do in the area. This week that's not going to happen since there are no Hawkeye team sports planned, at least not in Iowa City. There is a swim meet planned in Ames tomorrow if you fancy a drive. Not sure I'd recommend it though, it's pretty nasty driving out there after our blizzard. Looking at the schedule on the Hawkeyesports website I may need to resume my round up of sports events after the winter break. There's not a whole lot going on in the coming weeks. (Watching the Men's Basketball Team lose is probably not that high on your list!)

Almost done, but of course mustn't forget my weekly mention of Prairie Lights Bookstore. As someone who just loves books I have a self-imposed requirement to mention them every week... What better way to finish off the week than with a good book and a glass of wine? Especially on those cold and frosty nights we are having at the moment...

Being a former Rugby player I have Invictus on my list.  It sounds like you are giving it a thumbs up so I will have to go see it.

Hi Greg ~ Former Rugby player. I'm impressed. My brother too - He considers soccer a game for girls. :-) (You can imagine how well that goes over in a country where English football AKA soccer rules!)

Absolutely a thumbs up for Invictus. Especially now that my son, a champion movie goer has seen it. Following in his mother's footsteps he's become more of an authority on movies than I am and in his humble opinion it's a fantastic movie, every bit as good as he expected. Couldn't really lose, could it? Clint Eastwood is an amazing director. All his movies stand apart from the rest.

Thanks for stopping by.
