Life is not over (yet) for this house in Searcy Arkansas

Having saved old house plans and pictures from a widow who was dumping them, I'm sharing another one.

This one came with three pictures and the floor plans.  I love this first one with the garden growing on the right.  Note the tall imposing chimney.  Window flower boxes!!

Old house in Searcy Ar

What a nice side view.  The shutters are nice, the mail person would bring the mail right to the porch and there's a porch swing, of course!!

Notice there used to be lots of wooden door steps.  That garden must have been in the back yard too.

Then along came the 50's (probably) when they must have had traveling awning salespeople.

I'm saying that just judging by the number of houses that have those awnings over windows and doors.  Looks as if this salesman did a warped job of installing.  And the window boxes are being neglected.

Old house in Searcy ArNow we fast forward to today.  Here's the way the house looks now.  I drove by and was surprised to find it still there.  Gotta have a carport.  Shutters must be out of style.  Wrought iron became the style somewhere probably also in the 50's.

No garden.  Different kind of porch swing.

And look what has happened to that tall proud chimney.  It has taken a beating.

Now Searcy old-timers, I'll let you find this one.  I love the way you are friends with the google man.

So go take a walk!

Anita, careful or you'll bring down the wrath of Nutsy.  He does not like squirrel killers and has crewed on Dude considerably about his annual squirrel-hunting trip.  So do you know where this house is?

I think this house will be a challenge for us.  One think I note about the first picture is that the house is on a paved street with curbs.  In the '40s that would have limited the areas in Searcy where it could have been.   Curiously, the last picture shows it does not now have a curb but there are signs there was once one.

Anita, I remember when I would go out to Morris Institute that occasionally some of the boys would have a pet flying squirrel.  He would come up to them and climb on their shoulder.  Maybe you could adopt some of yours as a pet.  :-)

Barbara, as with those other houses, don't have a clue, YET.  The sidewalk does tell us something.

Gene, Bob rememembers the Morris School boys having a flying squirrel, too.   No thank you, I'll just keep killing them as long as they inhabit my attic space.   Sorry, Nutsy.....if they are friends or descendents of yours, give them the good word not to fool around in Greers Ferry. Ar.

Yes this house is a challenge. The sidewalk and curb is the best clue because it limits the search to main streets like Race, Arch, Center, Market , and Pleasure with numbers less than 1000 and near town center. I have been using the Google Satellite view and have come up with nada. I have spent far too much time but have enjoyed it. The numbers on the house may be something like 730 or 930. I have searched all the streets named above and avoided any streets without sidewalks. I think we may need a clue to continue, Barbara. The problem with satellite view is the trees. If the view is in tree full foliage time, the house may be obscured. No luck with Martin designed house search either.

What do we know about this house? 1) Basically it's the same as the one in 200 block of East Academy, but the rooms may be smaller. ( Barbara how do the floor plans compare?) 2) It faces east on a north-south street. See satellite dish in Barbara's photo.  3) It has a sidewalk which appears to run just in front of the house. (A tricycle run for the little guy who lived there). 4) The six inch curbs look as if they were poured off-site in approx. 6 foot sections and placed along the street. I'm thinking just in front of this house. The six inch curbs along the streets that Don mentioned appear to have been poured in place.  The rest of this street and curbs may have been upgraded during the mid fifties paving project. Note the rounded curb at the right edge of the latest picture.

It'll be a challenge that's for sure. I'm thinking of checking the streets near the cemetery and near the house on east Acad. I'll concentrate on the blocks Don mentioned. BTW, I believe that the E. Acad. house belonged to a letter carrier who retired early due to problems with his legs. Can't remember his name tho.

Oh!  I'm so happy.  The detectives are having a hard time and Anita just lets the guys do all the work.  You guys need a challenge!  It has to be in Searcy because I took the picture one day ago.  I'll give you hints in a few days.  You really need to rewalk the streets of old Searcy.  Isn't it wonderful that you can do it in your home.....even if your home is thousands of miles away.

Bob, I thought North South streets at first also but not many  of those have sidewalks.  North Main does. I looked there first.Apparently only main streets got walks. Walks in the 50s mean main streets close to downtown. Those curbs, walk, and curb strip with tree really look good for the 50's.

Walks in the 50s mean main streets close to downtown. I agree except a lot of homes around town had sidewalks just in front between the property lines.  Two examples come to mind: 1000 w. Vine  (walk no longer there) and the house across the street at 9?? W. Vine which still has the walk. I think the curbs in front of the mystery house were also a homeowner project and not something the city did.

Assuming the installer knew what he she was doing, the satellite dish in the picture faces the equator. That tells us that south is to our left. Ergo the home faces east. So it is on the west side of a north-south street.

Godmother,

You must not associate with squirrel killers. It is illegal. By the way, not the same house, different trees.

Bob, you are so smart.  I've never asked but I'll bet you are a retired detective or secret service man!!  Figuring that out from a satellite dish, which I hadn't noticed was on the house, is REALLY impressive.

Nutsy, I want you to meet the man above your comment.  Now notice he didn't say anything about trees????  Notice he would be a good person to improve your mod squad which may be getting a little rusty???  I don't know whether you could come in and solve a mystery like you did with Raven last year unless you do a little studying.  I'm asking him if he has classes for squirrels.

Mystery House

I noticed the dish orientation but couldn't believe it was on a North South street because of the sidewalk. I kept using the satellite view looking near the center of town. Bob's logic was impeccable. Now the rest of you can look following Bob's ideas. We make a good team, Bob!

BTW, the sidewalk is city built which follows my logic that the house was close to downtown.

You two guys are FANTASTIC.  But WHERE is it, Don?  Address, please.

Bob, would the mailman who had to quit being a mailman because of a bum leg be Malcomb "Chick" Murray?    I think he took Arthur Smith's place as our mailman, on West Arch Street.

Barbara, thanks, but I'm not that kind of sleuth; just an old country boy from Searcy. However, now that you've learned the trick of navigating by satellite dish you can go squirrel hunting with Anita without fear of getting lost on the back roads. Just look for an antenna on the nearest double-wide. BTW, don't either of you dare shoot any squirrels wearing WWI flying clothes or Mountie's jacket.

Congratulations, Don, on finding the house. Now, maybe we can get Anita to find out who rode that tricycle back and forth on the sidewalk.

Anita, not Chick, but his name came to mind. The Murray's lived, for awhile, in a duplex on Arch at the corner of Hickory. The band director, Bill Laas, lived on the other side. Chick was married to one of my mother's cousins who "baby sat" me at least once. But that's a cute story for another time.

Anita, me and you gotta practice with the google man.....those guys are TOO far ahead of us.

Bob, did Don tell you where the house is?  Or did you find it too?  I'm glad you've met Nutsy.  He's one fine squirrel and my godson.  LOL  I bragged to my husband about how you guys used a satellite disk to mark a direction and then get the hunted item!!  I think he was impressed too but didn't want to admit that he didn't know a satellite disk faced the equator either!

Don, great picture.  It's even better than the one I took right in front of it.

The house 3 doors up is 409 S. Spring. Google won't cooperate with addresses over 300 so your guess is as good as mine. Try 415 S. Spring. Miss Forrest lived somewhere up South Spring, I believe.

When you use Google Map, just put in S. Spring.

Nope. I never found it. However, I recall this much, maybe, "Copper" Davidson and his sister Vivian lived one house south. There was a "mom and pop" grocery across the street. The M&NA depot was, at one time, about a block south. That may be the reason for the sidewalk and curbs.  Thanks again, Don.

Anita, who owned that tricycle? : )

Miss Forrest lived on Woodruff.    Ive found  Lyman Forsyth  408 S. Spring   532-J,   Oma Davidson, who was probably Copper's mother: 509 S. Spring  phone 660,  Annie Mae Alston  117 S. Spring  1433,  Jim Atkinson  also ll7 S. Spring   (they were both teachers at Harding so are probably living in a boarding house)....Rev. M.D. Hemphill  601 S. Spring   1078-J.

Sorry,Bob, doubt if I"ll ever i.d. the tricycle....as I don't think we'll ever figure out who lived in THAT house.  cute little trike, though.
