I was recently contacted by a "new" home staging company in my area wanting to "hire" me to stage his homes. I agreeded to met with him, but went in with my own questions and thanks from a little help from my AR friends some of your questions also!  One of my questions...if you are a new staging company in NWA where did you get the before and after photos on your website? Answer: I don't remember, somewhere on the Internet. OK....red flag, what does that mean?

When I first started my business several stagers here on AR sent me before and after photos to use as an example...but I did not pass these photos off as my own work!

I had one of my partner Realtors call me about this person with several concerns...guess I'm doing my job educating...he realized the red flags also! :)

Whoa! I would have jumped on that right there and asked him if he had permission from the owners/copyright holders, and where was the disclaimer that those photos were NOT his work!

Donna ~ I'm so glad you saw the red flags and didn't give this "opportunity" one thought!  I can't believe it when unscrupulous people try to pass off someone else's work as their own.  They'll never last in the business though, because they won't be able to duplicate that level of work!

Lisa, I have my clients sign a photo release, so I can prove my work! I'm not to much worried about this person...if that's how he does business!

Maureen, Thanks to you and many others I was able to see the red flags!  Thanks for your help!

It's the ethics in staging that separate the the wheat from the chaff...

Glad you told these guys to chaff off.

Hi, Donna:
Sounds like he was one of those "big picture" people! Ready to make tons of money in one of the fastest growing professions: Home Staging. [ I wonder what the statistics are for the number of Staging companies going out of business?  We seem to gain 3-4 fo every one here in the Austin Area. ]  Nice job calling him out - that's why I brand my Staged photos - too much trouble for some one to use!

"Chaf off"... that is way too funny ;) Believe it or not, you can buy photos right off the net too. ALWAYS brand your work.

Good Job, Donna, for being savvy and ready to meet with him with your guns ready.  I'm sure you're holding back on us, because I'm sure that's not the only red flag you saw. Have you bothered to look at his website pictures closely (ie. Do you recognize any of them????)  Sometimes you can right click on the photo and look at the "properties" of the picture.  If it was copied and pasted directly from the web, it will have the original website listed under the "properties".

I don't understand how "stagers" can do that and face their clients honestly.  It's a shame that there are too many people trying to make their next BIG pot of cash from staging, as Michael said.  Wish that I could get into my website and brand my photos but I'm locked out.  MY BAD and so I guess it's time to develop my own site where I have more control.

Smart thinking Donna!

Plagiarism is my personal pet peeve. It really stings to have your hard work stolen from you, not mention how unethical to sell your services that way. I don't know how these people sleep at night.

I have to believe that what goes around, comes around.

Michelle, you are too funny!

Michael, anyone would have a really hard time lifting your photos for sure!

Karen, The knowledge I've gained from AR is unbelievable, don't think I would have made it this far in my business without it!

Cathy, Sorry...It's been a busy month!

Lori, Michelle is always too funny! Didn't know you could purchase b&a photos.

Connie, I will have to try that on his website to see what happens. And you're correct there were several red flags with this person. His very first question to me was...how do you market to the Realtors, what's your best marketing tool? It was more like a fishing meeting, he wanted to know more about how I run my business than anything else.

Ginger, I went in with lots of questions, several from my AR friends! You all rock!!!

Allegra, Agree!!!!

So many websites have the exact same photos on them, and I can't believe people don't notice when comparing all of us.  It really bothers me when people use canned websites, and the photos they have available, and you go to the gallery/photos/before & after area and it says "Photos coming soon!".  People believe the canned photos are their work.

But not to remember where you get your photos?

Donna, was he from "Hometenders" in AZ and wanted to branch out to your area?  I got that email a couple weeks ago, but haven't replied yet.

Cindy, My website may not be top of the line...but it's mine and my own work is shown!

Marianne, Don't think this was the same company...this guy lives here and is starting his company on his own, not a franchise.
