You may all think I’m nuts, but I had this crazy notion to build my own Olympic size training ground…for my son and his friends.

I started the permitting process three years ago, and started excavating a year later (with the 5 required state and town permits completed).

300 x 70 in June

My son runs Track, and a standard inner lane is 400 meters in length How to construct an oval that is 1,312 feet long? I asked my engineer and we plotted it out on a survey, it can be done and so we began.

400 x130 today

Did you know an Olympic size Pool is 164 feet (50 meters) X 84 feet (25 meters)? Did you know an Olympic regulation size hockey rink is 200 feet X 100 feet (60 X 30 Meters) and did you know if you were digging a one to three sloped wall…which will be filled with water 5 feet down from the top of the wall…and you wanted all of these Olympic sized Sports to be accommodated you would have to excavate and area of 400 feet-by- 130 feet…I didn’t know that at first.

 ...still working on it son.

Did you know if you dig a hole that is 400 long X 130 feet wide and you dug down 25 feet to fill this hole with spring water, you would have to remove 1.3 million square feet of volume…yeah I didn’t know that, right away either – but now I do. Bonus…sport: If a pond is 400 feet long and you want to hit a ball to clear this (about 450 feet) a 150 yard 8 iron is just about right.

We're ready to play too!

Year two of Digging,I hope to be done before my son Graduates.

Who thinks I'm Crazy? Well truth be told my wife, my son my contractor, my neighbors...are all willing to sign the papers to have me committed, But I have vision and will prove them wrong, you'll see.

Bill, The trucks roll out full of dirt a few days a week, we have a product (site work material) for labor & equipment deal going...when this is done it will be free. (after my cost of engineering, wetlands scientist, army corp, DOT,water & pollution control, excavation permit, surety bond, ,etc...etc...so not really free).

Hey, they don't call them dreams for nothing.  I think it is a terrific goal and your son is one lucky guy.

All kidding aside, I think it is great!  I am certain you will get a lot of use out of it once it is completed.

I remember a guy building a baseball field in a Corn Field. I see parallels here.

Very ambitious...not crazy at all.  I can see the practical side of it.  If you are going to build for one sport, why not build for three or four?  Makes perfect sense to me.  One lucky boy!

Now that would be a great undertaking...but why not?  Since you have the time and the love for it... the vision can be realized.... I'd say go for it if you're serious!

Steve, I have been the subject of lunacy before. It's great to get those incredible ideas, move them forward and wahlah...it's more of a project than anyone in their right mind would've ever started...so there is your proof. YOU were not in your right mind (or you can claim you were ill-informed.) Still, I think it is imperative that you proceed as planned! If you could keep us posted with diary updates and photos that would be much appreciated! I love the details you've learned and shared...who knew????

Dear Steve,

OK it sounds a little nuts, but we have all done something crazy in our lives. At least I hope we have. Life is not worth living unless you have a dream and a goal. Make it happen! What was that movie "If you build it they will come"... Field of Dreams? If its in your heart, just do it!

Jane, lunacy and genius are not that far apart...that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Betina, wehave 13 acres in a flood zone we can't really build on it...but we can dig, this is my field of dreams

Wendy, You know I'm a lefty...right brain, could be architect or engineer.

Yes you are a little crazy...but not for this one!  I have confidence that we here on AR will continue to share this ride with you and see it to completion!  And hey if your son's already in college, I see an AR cocktail party!

Steve, I think you have taken on a monumental task.  First, let me tell you that I so enjoy looking at your photos of NH, the mountains and the snow.  I don't get to see much of that anymore, and it is indeed very beautiful.

Next, to your pool.  It sounds like a labor of love which I'm sure it is for the time and energy it's going to take you to put it in.  I say that because I've built two pools here in Florida.  It's a nothing job here.  They dig a hole, tell you it will take six weeks (it never does!)  It usually takes a few months and voila, they fill it up, balance the chemicals and you're good to go.  But, it's different in NH simply because of the weather delays.

I'm sure your family will love that pool when it's finished, no matter what they say now.  Think of those lazy summer afternoons with the sun going down over those beautiful mountains and you bbq'ing for load of teenagers.  Keep that thought and send pictures when it's done.
