A fire from an unattended fire pit on the balcony of a home in Escondido reminds me that even though fires are warm and romantic, open flames are not allowed at most, if not all, of the 39 condominium complexes in Mission Valley. Many of the Mission Valley condominiums were built many years ago and are surrounded by mature vegetation. That mature vegetation, as well as the fact that all of San Diego County is a high fire hazard area, has caused many owners' associations throughout the county to disallow open flames around the exterior areas. Many of the condominiums themselves have fireplaces, and almost all complexes in Mission Valley have outdoor grills and picnic areas for barbecuing. If you have any concerns or desires about barbecuing on your balcony, make sure you get a copy of the owners' assocation CC&Rs before your contingency periods expire. Jim, Point very well taken! Before you decide to grill, check your CCRs and never leave a fire, even if it is contained within a BBQ grill. It can / does get out of hand very quickly!
With all of the fire problems recently in California, I am not all surprised to see that barbequeing outside is some sort of violation. On the East Coast lateley, we have too much moisture. This has been the wettest year I can remember in a long time. I would need an umbrella to fire up my barbeque.
I hope no one got hurt from the fire. Always a great reminder about the dangers of open fires.
Jim,
It's one of the things that encourage people to move to a house.
Otherwise, it can be too risky.
Brian
I would be too nervous to even try, no matter what the CC& R's said. There are usually common areas to do that. Maybe your next closing gift should be a George Forman Grill!!!!!
Jim,
Great advice. It's always good to read the CC & R's before trying anything like that. Me, I'd just stick to using the community grills in common areas.
I think Zoey the Cool Cat wants those steaks! We have those same rules here. It may seem silly to an owner, but if a careless neighbor causes a fire, they will realize it's for everyone's protection.
Hey, Wanda - Especially with some of these older complexes that have wood siding and lots of mature trees everywhere.
Hey, Tom - All of San Diego County is considered a high fire hazard area.
Hey, Irene - No injuries, but a lot of damage.
Hey, Brian - Unfortunately, too many of the people who move to houses don't take care of them, which presents a separate set of issues.
Hey, Jane - I did give a George Foreman grill once as a closing gift.
Hey, Carra - I figure that if it exists in the common areas, it's probably not a good idea to do it in the private areas.
Hey, Sharon - We got Zoey the Cool Cat when she was one year old, and whomever raised her taught her not to have any interest in people food.
