Not only should we think about the environmental impact associates with the production of the gifts we give, but we also need to consider the impact of their continued use.  One solution is,

Tip #13:  Use rechargeable batteries

Ni-MH batteries - www.livegreen-stapleton.com

But how do you avoid the disappointment of a child who has just opened his present only to be told that it won't work until the day after Christmas because the batteries the toy needs won't be charged until then?  Don't worry, rechargeable batteries have come a long way.  The latest technology is Nickle-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) and these batteries come out package fully charged (just like disposables).

So, while these batteries and their associated charges initially cost more money, they end up paying for themselves in the long run.  But that is generally the case when discussing green technologies.

However, what I think the greatest advance in rechargeable technology is, some Ni-MH batteries charges in as little as 15 minutes  Like the Rayovac I-C3.  I can't even get to the store and back in 15 minutes to buy disposable batteries!

I used to hate it when toys didn't come with batteries when I was a kid. Good tips.

Great tips! I love rechargeables like the Rayovac's you highlight for my camera! I always keep a spare set (or two) in my purse because they seem to go dead at the most inopportune times...I have also found a small mini charger that can fit in my purse or camera bag.

I am amazed how much green I have saved not purchasing batteries over the past 3 or 4 years! AND did good things for the environment!
