This is not my first blog about the benefits of living in Port Orange, Florida. For those of you who are not familiar with Port Orange, it lies about 10 minutes south of Daytona Beach and is part of the Daytona Beach area.

But for the meat of this post, I wanted to boast once again about this fabulous city, whose motto is “Unique by Choice, Not by Chance”.  I just found out today, that the state Bureau of Emergency Medical Services has named Port Orange Fire-Rescue as the top emergency medical services provider in the state of Florida! That's pretty incredible for a city of only a little over 56,000.

Just last weekend, I updated my CPR & First Aid Certification through one of our knowledgeable firemen and can attest first-hand to his professionalism and expertise.

The panel of judges based their decision on the areas of leadership, public education and quality assurance. A couple of notable achievements this year were...

1. Being the first in Volusia county to use an intraosseous driver, which is an alternative form of drug delivery when traditional IV access can’t be used.
2. Using leftover grant money from the flu shot program to buy automatic external defribillators for area middle and high schools, and training school staff to use them.
   

The Port Orange Fire-Rescue department will be recognized on July 18, 2007 at a state conference in Orlando, FL.
