There are so many great ideas on ActiveRain that it’s hard to find time to implement them all. Because of this, it’s important to always weigh the time commitment against the potential return. For me, this is one of those ideas that is a “No Brainer” on the “Should I Do It” scale. This is mostly because the total time investment is so small compared to the potential traffic boost both short term and long term.

Not Another Squidoo Post!

I know people have covered Squidoo before. And I am sure your probably thinking. “No, I can’t commit to one more website that I have to keep updated!” But that’s the great thing about Squidoo. You don’t have to continually update it to make it work. Let me give you a practical example.

A little over a month ago, I created a Squidoo Lens (Lenses are just what they call pages). My Lens wasn’t really anything earth shattering. It was a simple page that detailed some statistics that I received from the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®. It took me about 30 minutes to create the page. I pulled some of the data, created a few graphics, and included a link back to my website. I hit submit and didn’t think anything else about it.

Now fast forward about 30 days. I logged back into Squidoo and took a look at my stats for the lens. I knew I had to be getting hits because I kept seeing that Squidoo was sending additional traffic to my company website. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the Squidoo stats. In just 30 days there had been about 300 visitors. Now I understand, 300 visitors isn’t something to jump up and down about. But none the less, it’s a respectable number. After all, I never have to touch the page again, yet it will continue to supply me with a few hundred extra visitors a month. Not bad for 30 minutes of work! What was even more exciting was that most of these visitors were coming as a result of the Lenses’ Google placement. Below are some of the rankings. One thing to note - I did not do anything special to “optimize” my Squidoo lens. I simply created a page with factual data.

real estate statistics and marketing - #1 - Google
online realtor stats #2 – Google
what every realtor should know - #2 - Google
online real estate marketing stats #2 – Google
buyer realtor internet statistics #1- Google
real estate on-line statistics - #4 - Google
real estate online statistics - #4 – Google
real estate internet statistics - #5 - Google
real estate internet search statistics - #5 – Google
internet search statistics for real estate - #5 – Google
real estate agent research statistics - #6 - Google
real estate searches online statistics - #6 – Google
internet statistics for real estate - #6 – Google

There are about a dozen more keywords but I think you get the point.

Commit To Do It!

So commit to yourself to take set aside an hour to sign up for Squidoo (don’t forget to optimize your username) and write a lens with good original content. To help you get started, here are a few tips to remember when creating your lens...

  1. Pull readers in with your headline: Remember, headlines are everything. They are the gatekeeper between thousands of visitors and your website. Use a headline that makes people want to click!
  2. Use original content: Creating a lens from a recycled article from your website or blog post isn’t good enough. Instead, write original copy (or hire someone to write for you) that will be valuable and original content for both search engines and site visitors.
  3. Offer real value: Don’t mistake a Squidoo Lens for a billboard. Don’t turn your lens into one big commercial detailing how great you are. Instead, give great content and then validate yourself by posting a short bio or a link to your website.
  4. Fill a Need: One of the main reasons I created a lens about Real Estate Internet Statistics was due to the fact that I could not find adequate information in Google. My thought was, “If I am frustrated and not able to find the information, then there is a good chance that others feel the same way.”
  5. Have a strong “Call To Action”: Be sure to pull the visitor into interacting with you after they have read your lens. In looking back at my lens, this is an area I need to edit. My Call to Action is a little weak and not very specific. Always have a very specific action that you want the visitor to do. For example, instead of saying “To learn more about Dakno Marketing...” I should include something like “To receive a free guide on Catering to the Internet Buyer, email me at…”
  6. Get Specific: Creating a Squidoo Lens about New York Real Estate is not going to land you on page one for that keyword. Instead, focus on highly targeted information. A local market report, or information on a specific neighborhood.
  7. Search on Squidoo: See what your competition is doing on Squidoo. Search for other lenses that are related to your chosen topic. If that topic is over saturated with pages, then pick a new topic.

Putting these few tips into place can set you up for Squidoo Success!

Update from earlier post above ~~

Checked out the Squiddo website and it seems there is no way to control competitive ads on one's Squiddo page. Can't imagine that many Realtors want competitive Realtor's in their own geographic area having ads on their website. So unless there is some way to control the competitive ads, it seems the site might not be a good idea for Realtors after all.

Just my 2 cents.

Brad, Thank you for the info. Would you recommend getting more than one account to have different lenses in order to cover different niches and needs?

07/04/2007 01:55 AM by Camarillo CA Real Estate Agent/ Mana Tulberg (Beach View Real Estate)

Bob: Thanks for bringing up the topic of the ads. Yes Squidoo is an ad supported website, but there are a few things to note.

1) Squidoo is an "authority site" meaning that it is valuable for search engine optimization. Even if you only used Squidoo from an SEO standpoint, it would be worth the time.

2) Most people tune out these advertising blocks (There are even Browser plugins that block these ads.) so I think the potential loss is minimum compared to the investment. Keep in mind that many people pay $1.00/click for PayPerClick ads, so this is a huge money saver when thinking about other online marketing.

3) I want to be sure not to confuse people. Your comment mentions competitors ads on your website. I know you mean ads on the Squidoo page and not on your website. But I didn't want people to think that somehow Squidoo pushes these ads on their website.

Thanks for the feedback.

Mana:You can post multiple lenses from one account so there is no need to have multiple accounts. I guess you could consider having multiple accounts and "working the system" by rating your lenses from multiple accounts.

I found Squidoo last week and created a couple lenses.  I started getting a bit more traffic shortly after but not sure yet just where it is coming from.  None the less, anythng you do especially if it is free is worth doing to drive traffic to your site.

squidoo is cool, I have two lens myself.  There is a bit of a learning curve when first doing it, but it was fun and once I put my blog role on it, the lens seemed to get a bit more traffic, and one of them went to #1 for the small town I put it together for.  Great

Hey Brad - My lens is over 6 mo old and it gets absolutely no traffic.  It did rank high with google when I first created it.  Now it has slipped gOOOOOOOOOOgle obscurity.  I did contemplate creating another one. It really was very easy.

Another one that consistently ranks pretty high is Merchant Circle.  Here's my page. May be more of a local application then you're looking for.

Very nice recommendation. I just created squidoo page using your suggestion at Lehigh Valley Homes Online! Took your idea about marketing to the Internet Buyers and put a local twist on it... still needs lots of work but not sure how to put links in the sections that dont have a hyperlink box.

Thanks Again! Your posts always put me to work- Jill

07/05/2007 11:00 AM by Lehigh Valley PA Homes - Jill & Ron Fuhrer (Nazareth,Easton, Bethlehem - Prudential Patt, White )

Aubrey: Great job. Just a few tips to make it even better... Consider tweaking your title to make it more compelling. As much as I hate to say it. Hype works with your target market. So think about using words like "The insider's guide".  Get to the meat early. I like all the background info about the area (good from an SEO standpoint) but the person visiting the page probably already knows about the area. Get right to the point of how they can find a place and put the about the area stuff at the bottom of the page. Also, tweak your bio. Add a few links in your bio.

Jill & Ron: Congrats on putting things into action instead of just talk. A few tips... The title of the Squidoo page is a little over optimized. Make it more compelling so people will click. When I go to the page the first headline i read is "We understand..." Buyers don't care about you, they only care about them. Make it about them and not you. Consider changing to something like. "Providing Real Estate Information on Your Terms" or something to that nature. Every time your copy reads "we or I" try to rework the sentence to be about "You, Your."

Overall I really like the direction of both pages. Fantastic job. I have gone in and rated both lenses a 5 star. This should help bump up your ranking even more!

Well Brad, I took your advice and also put together - sorta - a lens, Homes in Mesa Arizona. I'm not sure of just "what" to do with it now.  I will check out the others mentioned above. I wanted to get it started since I think it's a great idea to get out there as much as possible.

Jill and Ron: Thanks. Some people get offended when others critique their work. So I am some times hesitant to do so. But I am glad that you are open to look at things from an objective point of view. I think that's what really makes people successful. Being able to listen and refine. The edits look great!

How in the world do I do that????

07/07/2007 08:42 AM by Carl Berg (ERA Wilder Realty, Inc)

Carl-

When you are in AR look to the left for "Linking to Active Rain"

Go there and you will see 5 links you can use.  Choose the HTML for the link you want to use in your Squidoo page.  Copy it (there is also a place here to report the Squidoo page to AR so they can give you the points)

Go over to your Squidoo page and use a "Link List" box to put your link in

In the Link box put your link www.activerain.com/realtor4life

In the Name This Link Box put a name for the link like "visit me at ActiveRain"

In the description box paste your HTML code

Don't forget to report your Squidoo page to ActiveRain back on the AR Link page-there is a box to put your Squidoo page address in that looks like this

Here is what it will look like- take a look at one of my pages-

That is pretty amazing for roughly 30 minutes of work.  You've caught my attention and will probably take the time this evening to see how much Squidoo can help my traffic.  I'm still trying to figure out how Paula Henry came up ahead of me in the Active Rain search engines when I'm #1 for our state and the Indianapolis area.  I know it's somethng to do with SEO.  It's not so much that I'm upset that Paula is ahead of me, but I've been working at all of this for sometime and I'm behind her now.  So thanks.  If nothing else, I hope it drives more prospects to my sight.

Wow I just checked the comments on this post. It's great to see everyone helping each other out. That's really what AR is all about. I never even thought about adding a link back on the Squidoo page for extra points. Now that's thinking!  Just be careful about this practice. The one way link may be of more value than the points. What I mean by that is this. If you create a Squidoo Page, then create a post on AR about that page, it gives you a solid one way link from AR to your Squidoo page. But as soon as you link back to AR on your Squidoo page, it appears as a link exchange. For me, the value of the link is worth more than 300 points. But I like the creative thinking!

07/08/2007 08:45 PM by Laura Monroe- Real Estate Virtual Assistant (Creative Agent Solutions.com)

I recently learned about Squidoo when scoping out another VAs website. Had never paid attention to what was going on around me.  Now, it is all over the place.

Some resources I'm reading say to have content, as we've been told on lots of things.  It doesn't have to be long -- even splitting a topic into two entries can be a better thing.  The Squidoo squads are deleting some spamming.  But having content that other people will rate high and link to will be very useful.

I'm impressed with the information I find on lenses there.  Now, to just get organized enough to get it done.

This is great information!  Thanks so much for sharing.

I took the time to create a Lens -- if anyone could give me some feedback on it, I'd appreciate it!  This would be great to make one for each listing, or break it down into buying, selling, etc.

One question I have -- should I place it under the "travel" section for a specific area?  or should I place it under the Business category?  I believe most RE pages (lens) I've seen are under Travel.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Thanks for the tip on Squidoo!  I look forward to sharing it with our class of realtors as they get more involved with real estate marketing online.
