Well, holiday time has set in and staging has slowed down a bit. I imagine that it will pick up again just like it did last year, but in the meantime I need something to do.  I always have projects, but I actually launched a new division of my company last month: Staging Our Youth For Success.  So far so good!

Education is very important to me and so is preparing our youth for success.  When I was a teacher I realized that our students today are lacking valuable skills to succeed in school.  Once they start doing poorly because they lack these important skills, their self esteem drops and then performance at school gets worse.  Mom and Dad get down on the student, then the teachers and then the kids at school start to realize there might be something wrong.  It is a vicious cycle that most kids never break out of.

I want to help them.

I have started a program called Achieving and Believing Achieving and Believingfor middle school students.  They get a healthy snack as we discuss the importance of nutrition, exercise and plenty of rest.  I give them self esteem and motivation exercises to do so that they can see that there can be more for them.  Then we do study skills that will help them achieve better in the classroom.  Once they start achieving, they start believing that they are actually worth something.  It is a truly beautiful thing!

Most kids want to do well in school, but they are not taught based on the way they learn.  I give them a learning styles survey so that we can figure out how best they learn.   After they discover how they learn, a whole new world opens up for them.  Two weeks ago, I gave the students the survey and then we discussed different strategies to help them study according to their learning style.  I challenged them to try one technique to see if there was a difference.  This week when I polled the students ( I have twenty-three total) those that tried the challenge said it helped.  I heard one story after another of students saying that they tried __________ and got a hundred for the first time on their spelling test.  It really does work and the look of accomplishment on their faces was worth more than anything in the world.  What a gift for all of us there.

Thursday is the last session for this group and I will miss them.  I have another session starting the second week in January.  I can't wait.  I love being with the kids and helping them see how awesome they are.  I am so lucky to have this also be a part of my life and my business.  I am pretty grateful right now that there are slower times in the Staging Business.  I would never have gotten to make this program happen otherwise.

Awesome idea Sheila!  You're a real gift to your community.  All that giving is going to come back home to roost.  Get ready!

Sheila, that is an inspiring story! What is the test you give them? I'm fascinated by that. For years my son and I struggled with his homework because I believed he needed to get it  done as soon as he got home and he always procrastinated. I eventually learned that he needed that last minute adrenaline to help him really perform. Not my style! I can't relax until work is done but when I finally accepted our differences and let him do his thing, he excelled. Tough but good lesson for a parent. I think it's wonderful that you are doing that....those LUCKY kids!

What a wonderful way to give back..  More than likely some of these kid's don't have any support at home. Giving them encouragement could change their lives. Keep up the good work.

Sheila how great it is that you can and are giving back to your former profession.  As a former K-8 teacher I know that EVERYONE involved loves having you there...the teacher because they get a break (and probably learn something from you), the kids because they listen better to a new voice and the community for what you are teaching.  BRAVO!

BTW...love the new headshot.

Thats good news! I wish my teachers in Mississippi had actually cared about my learning progress when I was a kid.

I would imagine working with the kids over the holiday slow season is a nice change. I've never staged a house but I've moved enough times to realize that staging homes is probably not the easiest job in the world.

Do you own alot of your staging furniture or do you rent all of it?

Sounds pretty cool - how is this funded?  How often do you meet with the kids?

When I read the title, I was thinking that you had started a holiday decoration business or something similar to that as a natural outgrowth of your staging business.  What a great use of talents from your former profession.

Jason - I am lucky to have this community that is so open to my crazy ideas! I am really excited about the direction that this is starting to take actually.  Will keep you posted!  Thank you!

Allegra - There are actually several learning style surveys that you can take.  The easiest one to do is to ehat happens when someone says the word "car".  If you see a car, then you are probably a visual learner. If you hear a car running or another sound the car makes, then you are an auditory learner.  If you see yourself writing the word car or are actually in a car, then chances are you are a "doing" learner.  I do that with the first and then confirm with the survey.  Nine times out of ten whatever the outcome was on the car test is what was their predominate learning style on the survey.  It is amazing how different life is when you find out how you learn and what motivates you.  When you unlock that puzzle for kids, their lives change for the better!  I know you can understand!  Thanks!

Diane - Thank you for the kind words.  I am really enjoying this time with them!

Thanks Tony - I always appreciate you support!

Ginger - Thank you, mam!  It certainly has turned out to be a win-win for all of us!  I know you understand why!

Brandon - I do own a storage unit full of staging inventory - not very much in the way of furniture, more accessories than anything else.  I am thinking about selling that off though.  I really want to focus more on staging consultations than staging vacant homes.  The market here really does not support that and it would be more cost effective for me to liquidate the inventory.  Big Sale going on in January! I really appreciate your comment about your chidlhood education.  There are so many people who say that to me. Thanks for stopping by!

John - I meet with the kids once a week for an hour after school for six weeks.  I funded it through what I charge the kids to attend and a little from my company, Staged SO Right.

Wendy - Thank you very much!

James - Thank you for the good wishes!

Renee - I am enjoying it.  I didn't realize how much I missed being with the kids until I started this up again.  Thank you!

Jesse - That would certainly be a natural assumption.  The economy here is rough this season and staging and decorating is still viewed as a luxury item.  I see "Staging" as something we can do for all areas of our life.  Having a division for children just seemed like a natural fit when you look at it that way.  Thanks for your kind words.

Sheila - This is outstanding!  Can I be in your class?  It's been my experience that when I give, I'm the one to receive the greatest blessing from it.  Sounds like you have a win-win thing going on here with the students receiving the benefit of what you are teaching them and you getting the joy from seeing them grow.  Congratulations!

PS - Great photo!!!!

Sheila,

Great! It seems as these kids get older the situation get go from bad to worse and there is not much that can stop it. Schools tend to focus so much on academics and I wish they had something like this in their curriculum. Perhaps you'll start a trend!

Love it!  I'm a debate coach -- I see so many kids that get poor grades in school because they are downright bored, and when they find success in debate it really really motivates them in so many aspects of their lives.  Working with kids is so wonderful!

This is a wonderful thing Sheila!  There are so many lessons that we we are learning as we walk through the challenge of the housing crisis that have application to many other settings.  Kudos to you for the creative insight to see and envision new ways of relating and for helping kids build better lives.

Sheila, while staging is probably enjoyable for you, there is nothing quite like helping children. I think what you are doing is AWESOME and I'm sure you are making a huge difference for these kids. Too many schools, dictated by the states, only teach kids how to do well on tests and they simply don't have time to spend on the basics of being successful.

Fernando - Thank you!

Patsy - Thank you - I do love this class and have really enjoyed it!  You can join in anytime.  Who knows - maybe you can start one down in Georgia!  Good to hear from you - hope you have been busy!

Andrea - Thank you so much!  I appreciate your kind encouragement.  I would love to see it grow!

Marti - You are awesome!  Thank you for the feature!  I am so excited!

Corinne - I wish it was a trend that would be adopted by school systems, but luckily there are programs like this that can help to fill in the gaps.  Maybe in time the schools will become better equipped to teach the basics such as these.  Until then it means I have a job doing something I love.  Thanks for stopping by!

J. Phillip - I bet I get back much more than I am giving.  This has really been a great experience for me.  I hope that the kids will one day become wonderful leaders for our community.  Thanks!

Shana - How fabulous!  It is wonderful what you are doing with the kids in your area and you are absolutely right.  Many of the kids are bored.  We have many students that are labeled incorrectly and aren't given alternative ways to learn or study.  We limit so many of students by trying to get them to fit into the wrong molds.  Thanks you for sharing your story and please keep up the good work!

Lola - thank you so much.  It began as a method of survival, but is blossoming into things I never expected.  I appreciate the encouragement.

Kathy - I will try and post more about it, but it really took very little effort.  I had conducted this class when I was a teacher before on a volunteer basis.  I went back to that school and offered to do it again for a minimal fee and asked if I could send flyers home.  I did and had 23 kids sign up.  We meet once a week for six weeks and we have had a great time.  I had all of the lesson plans from the last time I did it, so it was really just a matter of pulling everything together.  It has worked out so well that I am considering opening it up to the public schools in the area.  I will keep you posted.  Thanks!

Marian - I am so blessed by this I almost feel guilty.  Thanks!

Dan and Amy - I agree with you 100%.  I wish it was different for our students too, but feel a little better knowing that I can help some of them.  I do enjoy staging, but this is a passion I felt really compelled to try.  Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Guy - I appreciate it!

Thanks for the encouragement Al!
