Water leaks in the home are more common than you think.  Higher water bill than normal?  Perhaps you have a water leak in your home that you don't know about.  Finding these leaks can be easier than you think.  Here's the first thing to do to see if you have a water leak in your home:

1.  Locate your water meter, where the water from the city enters your home.

2.  Make sure all water is turned off inside and outside the home.  This includes the evaporative cooler, and the swimming pool auto filler.

3.  Read the meter and record the figures.

4.  Re-read the meter 20 minutes later.

5.  If the reading changes, or you notice a movement of the dials on the meter, you need to find out where the water is going.

The most likely place for water leaks in your home are your toilets.....

It's always the toilets.  Always the toilets.  When I was young and dumb, a running toilet I ignored cost me $500 in extra water bill $$.  That hurt.  Now I listen carefully for those faulty flapper valves.

David - I guess that was a lesson you never forgot.  Kinda costly lesson to learn.  Stay tuned for my next post!

Happy Post-Holiday Troy,

If we were closer I would recommend my son-in-law, the plumber, to fix any leak.  Houseboats have an interesting system for their toilets:  incer-ete is most common.  Somewhere I have a link to a vendor who sells them.  Cabins often have a composting toilet. My stepson just installed a 1-2 type toilet.  The kids love demonstrating how it works.

Troy,

Even more common now that homes are left vacant for extended period of times. Pipes get pin hole leaks throughout the lines when water sits in the pipes. Nearly every REO property has potential for major plumbing issues with water lines and water heaters because of this.
