It is probably a combination of Google rolling out Caffeine (thier new indexing system) and the impact that personalized search is having. You may want to try searches logged into your Google account, logged out, logged in as someone else, and even on other machines (the logged out personlization is based on cookies which would not be on a different machine). These changes have been causing people to jump around in the results. Also local results and videos coming up on page one may be pushing your organic results down the page and if they are too far down, on to page 2.
I can tell you only that my site trafice is way down! Perhaps it's seasonal, but I didn't experience a similar drop lsat year.
I can't understand the system either, I'm up and down also
