Coming soon to a Custom Facebook Page near you…

Tab Width Reductions!

(boo….)

Part of Facebook’s developer roadmap was the proposal for applications to have a reduction in canvas width from 760 pixels to 520 pixels wide.

It was unclear if this was also meant to include Custom Facebook Page Tabs and there was plenty of discussion that they would not.  (custom tabs are not applications but use many of the same features like FBML)

Facebook just clarified their stance and reportedly will be changing the max width of page tabs to 520 pixels sometime in late 2009 / early 2010.

What does that mean for you? Nobody’s sure yet. Using just the banner image as an example, here’s what I can tell you.

If you have a banner image that is sized by number as in

img src=”http://www.your website.com/header.jpg” width=”760″

You’ll have to go in and change that to width=”520″ – easy enough, eh?  This is a way to force the size of an image to fit the space

If your banner image is set via the percent function as in:  width=”100%”  you may have nothing to change.  It depends on the image itself.  The browser will automatically size the image to 100% of the width of the image.  If the image is 520 wide – it’ll now fill the available space.  If it's a 900 wide image, you'll have to change to the width=”520″.

When will this all happen? They’re not saying, just “late 09/ early 10″.  (oh happy days!)

One thing is for certain – nothing in Social Media is ever constant (except change).

Greg - Thanks for the very nice words!  I LOVE the way your page came out. (all I did was copy your website's look and feel).  Glad you asked...

Button size as it is nowThe good news is that everything is salvageable.  We can just adapt the width to fit it all in.

For instance, this is the 1st button of the 6 in a row on your site.  "MLS Search".  To initially make it fit we already shrunk it a bit from it's 132 x 168 size.

It's brought into GB via this:

<a href="http://gregfly.idxre.com/idx/searchMap.cfm?cid=41114" target="blank"><img src="http://www.gregfly.com/files/images/12925/misc/h_nav01-hov.jpg" width="120" height="153" alt="MLS Search"></a>

We need to change it to roughly width="80height="120"  And the same idea with the tables and other images (and the flash).

Greg's ButtonFor others, it's a redesign - making the page more vertical in design.

I'd guess that John hit the nail on the head. Whenever someone offers you something for free, expect the other shoe to drop sooner or later. First they get you used to using it and build a customer base... THEN start building in the profit centers. How many of you remember when ATM's first came out and withdrawals were fee FREE?

My guess is that they will use the new acquired empty screen space to sell more ads.

It's great to be aware of changes coming. Everything with the internet and social media is expedentially changing so it would be impossible to keep up. I just try and be aware of what really does affect me and what do I really need to change. It's all about ROI with our time.
