The best way is don't!  Let your lender get it for you.  If you have never used your VA Eligibility it only takes us a second to get it on line through the VA ACE program and we are happy to do it for you.  If it is the 2nd or subsequent use we may have to mail away for it and that will take up to 3 weeks.

What do I need to provide you for you to get my C of E for me?

If you are on Active Duty we will provide you with a Statment of Active Military Service that your unit personnel office or your commander needs to complete and return to us so that we can submit that along with the request to the VA on your behalf.

If you are a Veteran we will need a copy of your DD214 to submitt with your request.

I got out 10 years ago and don't have a clue where my DD214 is.

In that case you need to obtain your DD214 before we even begin.  You may go to www.vetrec.archives.gov to obtain a copy of your DD214.

The important thing to remember is that we will do the work for you and achieving your goal of home ownership will be easeir than you ever thought.

If they just want to do it themselves though.....I would tell them to go to www.va.gov

Hi Cheri -- Your are absolutely correct.  I always volunteer to do it for them because I don't want them to feel daunted in any way or to think it may be just to hard to do.

I thought you need a true copy of your DD 214.

I agree, there are just some people that like a more hands on approach. They like to be in control because they think it will get things done faster. Then there's the generational thing where some people aren't as confident with the internet and wouldn't know HOW to get to www.va.gov in the first place so they really need our help! IT's great that you are willing to help those that need it.

Hello, Bruce!

Thanks for sharing this useful information.  You're right--the lenders I work with take the extra step of getting this information for the clients.  It doesn't cost anything, so why not provide a little effort that means a lot.

Thanks Yolanda -- Because we do it every day it is really easy for us and yet may be daunting to the borrower.  Have a great 4th

Great post, Bruce.  It is certainly easier to write VA loans today than when I started in 1980.  We do a lot of VA work with the Subase and US Coast Guard Academy in the area.

Philip -- Absoluetly.  We have the 25th Div, Hickham AFB, Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Kaneohe Marine Corps Base, and Coast Guard Base Honolulu, plus the Reserves and Military Retired here in Hawaii.  We do a LOT of VA loans out here.  Aloha

Great info Bruce.  That is one of the very first questions that my buyers ask me too, "Should I get my C of E?"  I just tell them to talk to a VA approved lender and he will more than likely be able to obtain it through ACE or point you in the direction necessary to obtain it.

I have been out of the military for over forty years.  I recently applied for Social Security and found that I had to have a copy of my DD-214 for the SS office.  After going to a couple of veterans service offices, I got a number for the military archives office.  I actually got to talk to a live person (who was very human) who did a quick research, found my records, and mailed a certified copy to me within five days.  I sure wish everyone in government, especially veterans affairs, were this caring and efficient.

David-- I am so glad that you went to them.  I have just had fantastic results working with them.  Congrats on joining those of us who double dip.  I started drawing SS income in Mar.  Sure ain't much compared to what I have given them over my life time.  I sure hope they privatize it for the young folk of today.  Aloha
