Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas - Dallas/Fort Worth - Helping Save Lives For Over 40 Years

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Austin Texas Homes, LLC 453249

My mom, Margie Wright, is the director of the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas, which is located near downtown Dallas.  She's been working there for just over a decade, as part of a long career in social work and public service for those who really need help.  I just wanted to help get her agency more exposure, in an effort to help with their fundraising efforts.

At this time of year, and in our current economic climate, it's easy for people to slip into depression and feelings of utter helplessness.  The recession has taken a toll on our national morale, simply put.  For those who are nearing the end of their rope, the Suicide and Crisis Center provides tangible help and a stellar and well-trained group of volunteers who are ready to listen.

Ironically, when times are tough, and people have less money to give, the center's services are needed more than ever.  If you or anyone close to you has been affected by suicide, you probably wish that you could have done something more to help.  I lost two friends of mine last year, one to cancer and one to suicide.  Obviously, I couldn't do much other than pray to help my friend with cancer, but it might have only taken one conversation to save my other friend's life.  Having undergone a major depression as a teenager, I know this from first-hand experience.

The center provides a wide array of services, including:

  • 24-hour crisis line
  • Support groups for survivors of suicide
  • "Teens Can Survive" - proactive program developed to help identify youths who are suffering from mental illness and/or contemplating suicide
  • Suicide debriefings - organized within 24-48 hours to help groups cope with loss
  • Crisis intervention services
  • Professional in-service workshops
As part of their intervention program, the Suicide and Crisis Center also provides training for local law enforcement.  A SWAT Sergeant who completed this training stated, "The Center's Crisis Intervention Model is the most organized and effective tool I have ever used in defusing a crisis."  WOW!

I have donated to the center myself, and I feel that it's certainly a worthy cause, regardless of my own family ties.  If you're interested in donating, visit: http://www.sccenter.org/donation.html

Their main website is at http://www.sccenter.org.

The 24-hour crisis hotline is 214.828.1000 or 866.672.5100 (toll free). Last year, they handled 18,696 phone calls to help others.

This is a really important cause in these tough economic times.  I hear almost on a daily basis lately about suicides and it just breaks my heart.

Unfortunately this is due from the state of the economy. We always need to be aware of folks around us that are hurting. So many agencies are overwhelmed with so many needs. We need to pray for these folks.

Jason - I lost my brother-in-law to suicide 20 years ago.  To this day our family still wonders if there was something more we could have done to help him.  I wish there were programs like this available back then when he thought there was no way out.

Very good thoughts on this one Jason. For some this time of the year is the WORST for them with their mental health and they just want to push through it. A lot of people don't realize that. Always lots of people hurting. All the more important for all of us to spread lots of love, kindness, and smiles to those we touch each day.

That's very compassionate of your mom to help in this area. I'm sure there are a lot of people who are VERY depressed in this economy! This is our scarcest gift-giving year, ever! But wordly possessions are not our focus. If people will look "up", they'll see a lot more good than bad. I hope this post helps someone.

Jason - Great reminder - depression caused by economic distress and/or the holidays are a recipe disaster... Your mother certainly has a tough but rewarding job.

Hi Jason,

This is a worthy cause your mom is handling. We do tend to get so wrapped up in our world at this time of year we forget there are those who are very depressed and feeling life is not worth living. My sister worked at the battered women's center for a decade and the rewards were great even though the job was demanding. Thanks for sharing Jason.

Jason, That is a wonderful thing that your mother is doing and I know many people feel in dispair around the holidays.  I do hope others contribute time and/or money to help those that are reaching out.

Absolutely sad when one slips into depression and contemplates suicide. Wonderful what your mom does and if an ounce of prevention can save a wonderful life then more should get involved. I knew a young man that did not show any signs and I then heard that he could not bear life any more. That really breaks my heart.

Jason, I have never experienced someone I know directly taking their own life but I have seen the devastating effects on my friends who have gone through it.  It's a wonderful job your mom is doing.  God bless her!

I am now officially in love with your mom. My dad committed suicide when I was five, and my best friend's dad committed suicide when we were 28. I've read research that indicates there is a suicide gene in the human genome, so I'm cautious now, especially since I went on my own suicide journey from April 15-27, 1993. Tell you mom, "Thanks for being there for those who need her."

Happy Holidays!

Jason my friend...

I just finished writing a comment of thanks on your post,

Update on ActiveRain Member Liz Carter - Your Prayers are Welcome!

and came by to say hi on your fist post, which just happened to be this one about your wonderful Mom.  I was fortunate enough to meet her at your birthday party in Austin last year.  She is a beautiful, caring, outgoing, friendly, happy lady, please tell her hi and Merry Christmas for me. Jason's Mom cutting his birthday cake in Austin Aug. 2008

This is a picture of Jason's Mom serving his birthday cake in Austin 2008.  The saying "A picture is worth a 1000 words" is so true...you can tell what kind of lady she is from this smiling face!

You managed to get all the details right about my health news :-), which shows that you really care and listen.  I've been on the active list for double lung, and a liver organ transplant list for 1 1/2 months now.  I have a pager that when it goes off I have one hour to get to St. Luke's Hospital for the surgeries.  It could go off any minuet or it could take over a year.  Houston has the shortest wait time in the country so I'm sure it will not be years.  Good thing too since I could not make it that long, I'm getting worse a lot faster now.  I'm blessed to have all my family and friends along on the ride with me.

Have a very Merry Christmas, Love Liz

Thanks to Jason for this post, and thanks to all of you who have commented.  I am so blessed to have a son that is so special and so compassionate.

I would encourage all of you to be mindful of those around you who might be hurting and might need an extra ounce or two of "active listening".  It is really a tough time for lots of folks

Jason, I can understand why this would be a tough time for many people.  So many of my friends have lost a loved one, either a parent or a child this year and the holidays are so hard for people who have recently lost someone.  Thank you for putting this out there.

Jason, Kudos to your mom on her work. You hear of suicide more and more. The hopelessness and loneliness that one must feel before they take themselves out, is beyond my comprehension level. It is so awful. My ex took himself out, and it took a full two and half years for me to walk upright again. So, I am sure your mom not only helps those contemplating it, but those on the sidelines affected by it. Really, what a wonderful mom you have. Thanks for sharing her work with us.
