The Learned vs. the Learners - What did you learn today?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Check Realty

As the use of the Internet in the U.S. grows past 80% the speed of change accelerates. In real estate the amount of new information available to us is amazing. Because of the incredible amount of new information available to us in our small town Prescott Arizona market we are seeing a widening knowledge gap between the Realtors who "already know it all" and what I like to call the "Learners".  The speed of new information is so great that an agent who goes even one year without making significant educational progress will miss a huge amount of technological progress in our industry.

In our Keller Williams market center in Prescott Arizona, we teach new agents to allocate their time into thirds; one third for education, one for prospecting, and the final third for servicing clients and listings. To the the "Learned" or those who have been in the business for some time and have stopped learning new techniques, it seems as if we are wasting our time in the classroom. But when you actually look at performance, the leading teams and agents aways seem to be the ones who are in the classroom, learning, teaching and trying new things.

Last month I was fortunate to be able to attend a social networking / marketing class with Ben Kinny. He is one the the leading KW agents in Bellingham WA. He is a leading agent (in my opinion) because of two things: first he works really hard, and more importantly he is constantly learning. He is always trying new things and tweaking them and testing them to see what works best.  Kinny is a "learner". As the markets change, (and they always change) the learners will always be 3 steps ahead of everyone else.

As Realtors we need to understand that learning is a life long habit. And that in order to do the best we can for our clients, we must spend the time and the energy to educate ourselves. Of course here on A.R. I'm preaching to the choir!

Dave Conners considers himself a "Learner" and enjoys discovering new music, new food, and new ways to help his clients in Prescott AZ.

Alan Greenspan once said in an interview that the day you stop learning is the day you stop living. You've definitely aligned yourself with a great company that believes in the basic principle of learning.
