If I've given extravagant gifts in the past, do I have to continue the tradition? You should only think about two things when you think about price--your budget and your relationship to the person. What I give my sister might be different than what I give to my coworker. I've worried about this in the past too.  Some years my wife and I have bought large gift cards for our friends, but in the last few years we were not able.  Because they are friends and not acquaintances, I know they understand that money is tighter today than several years ago.......Merry Christmas Jason!!!
