Washing your hands regularly throughout the day is an absolute must.  And, you may want to give your hands an extra scrub after coming in contact with these six locations:

1.  Shopping cart.  E. Coli was found on 80 percent of shopping carts sampled in a recent study!

2.  A cutting board.  There's more harmful bacteria on this kitchen staple than on your toilet seat.

3.  First floor elevator button.  Everyone touches this throughout the day, which means the amount of germs drastically increases.

4.  ATM Enter Key.  Once again, more fingers + more germs.

5.  Your desktop.  Staying in your office all day means a higher amount of bacteria due to any food you eat, coughs and sneezes.

6.  Playground.  Almost every kid who comes back from playing on the jungle gym and monkey bars has major bacteria (even fecal) all over their hands.  So march those kids right over to the sink the minute they come in and make sure they suds up really well.

Kristin, I love your little germ cartoons, perfect for your blog.  I'd like to add the bathroom stall door handle to the list.  Okay, I couldn't resist.

The cleanest places we think can end up being the filthiest! Great art!

Thanks for the reminder! I hope everyone reads this.  I think it is a step in the right direction that grocery stores now have hand wipes at the entrance, but I am not sure how many people use them.  And if all the germs are on the cart, then they are also on the fruits, vegetables, cans, packaged foods that everyone picks up and puts down.  OK so I am talking myself into never eating again, which is just perfect for this time of year!  Have a great day!

Peggy, great point!  I told my hubby about this and now he doesn't think it is wierd when I use the wipes at the groery store...but, you are right...germs are everywhere!

Yuuuck, a few more places to worry about, I always take the paper towel and use it for the door handles when leaving a public rest room.

OK, now I have even more to worry about in my life!!!

From now on, I'm getting out at the 2nd floor and walking down the stairs!

I love that they have hand wipes now in grocery stores for shopping carts!

I never use the ATM.

I don't generally hang out on the playground!

Can't do anything about the desktop!

And, lastly, I'm throwing out my cutting board and now using my toilet seat for all my chopping needs!!!

Hey, Kristin. I really wish they would come up with something to help disinfect playgrounds on a regular basis. I hate taking Josh to the playground and then two days later he is sick. Yuck, Jim

My wife is always leery of shopping carts.  In fact, she bring me along on shopping trips so I can push the cart for her.  These days, we seldom travel without  hand sanitizer to minimize germ contact.

You left out money. So many people touch it, it's awful.

Kristin

The germs are all around us. I guess we have to carry and use hand sanitizer.

Good luck and success.

Kristin, such cute little germs in your clipart!  It makes me NOT want to wipe off the shopping cart.

You will never believe what my first thought was going to be for a comment but ALAS you sadly  underestimated my commenting ability.  :-(   I will let it rest with Craig since the sun is up first over the Tar Heel State and he thought of it first. :-)

Have a safe and great New Year with your HTH!!!!!!!

Hi Krisin,

Interesting article, also reminds me of an episode of "Top Gear" where the examined the boot or as we know it, the trunk of a car.  Since this is where many people place their groceries.  I don't recall their data, yet I think the boot/trunk was worse than the shopping cart.

It inspired me to clean out the trunk before each trip to the grocery store.

That's great, Kristin! I have read similar findings that kind of throw our stereotypes about bathrooms out of the window! I've also heard that pens (in banks and at checkouts) are a germ haven.
