Besides giving gift cards, which could be used to purchase items that will eventually end up in a landfill, how about this?

Tip #18: Gift a sustainable donation

Make a donation to an organization that promotes environmental issues on behalf of friends and family. Kids would love it if you adopted a snow leopard for them, or maybe an Emperor Penguin. Another great charity is the Environmental Defense Fund, which is offering to match any donation dollar for dollar through the end of the year.

As you can imagine, the list of viable charities is endless. So pick one and go for it.

But be leery of anyone who says they made a donation in your name to "The Human Fund". Ha ha...
