You know the old saying "two heads are better than one." Well, here's another one: "two books are better than one," and, of course, more books are even better.
While looking for Gary Keller's Shift at the bookstore, I was browsing all of the books nearby, and one jumped out at me. Why? Maybe I'm attracted to a new hardbound book, or maybe it was the title, Genius of the Beast. That title looked interesting, and the subtitle even more so: "A Re-Vision of Capitalism." So, of course, I had to buy it.
This book by Howard Bloom is a perfect "corollary" or companion book to Shift. Bloom explains WHY shift happens, and knowing this will help you to place Keller's book within an overall framework of the economy, the Western system of capitalism, philosophy, and human psychology. Knowing WHY shift happens will help you to envision and prepare for each new shift as it occurs. There is a lot of information in Genius that is amazingly relevant to the business of real estate and to our careers as Realtors.

According to Bloom, evolution is vicious. It tests us with crashes to discover who is the greatest social structure maker. Those who survive are those with the greatest powers of social organization. When Gary Keller faced a downturn in the business cycle he re-visioned the idea of a real estate brokerage firm. The success of Keller Williams Realty is a tribute to his vision and his perseverence.
Success in real estate, as in any business or personal enterprise, involves three tools as defined by Bloom:
1) tuned empathy, your ability to tune your emotions to those of your customers,
2) saturated intuition, your gut sense, based on knowing the daily flow of your business as if it were the flow of your own breath, and
3) truth, that is, truth at any price including the price of your life (i.e., ethics).
