I am going to start using that...

Last night my wife and I were visiting some friends.  They had their grandson there who is 5 years old.  They put in a movie for him...It's a Wonderful Life...Very much a classic!   Well, the grandson had never seen a Black and White movie before.  He exclaimed..."Wow Grandma...Is this movie from back in the19's?"

I thought right away...I am going to use that when talking to my Grandkids and other young children...

Yea...I remember back in the Nineteen Hundreds... We had to walk to school 5 miles uphill both ways!  We lived in a very poor area.  The school only had 1 pencil and we all had to share it...all 15 of us and the teacher!  Someone broke the pencil one day and the school closed for two days until a new one could be found!

Our TV was Black and White...and we had to get OFF the chair, go up to the TV and turn a knob to change the channel, of which we had 3 choices!  Yea...the 1900's was a tough time to live in.  You kids really have it made today.

The windows of our cars had to rolled down with a HAND CRANK!

Yea, and you had to be home to talk on the phone, which hung on the wall and you had to stand within 2 feet when you talked on it, that is when no one else of the 7-10 others families were not using it!  Yup...those were the hard days!

I the 1900's, we had to push our lawn mowers across the yard, and you were lucky if it had a motor!!!

Our radios were AM and scratchy when you listened.  When the portable radio's came out...WOW! We thought we had the world by the BUTT!!!

Yea, Yea...I remember Dad Selling the farm.  Man how he complained about all the paperwork...ALL 2 PAGES OF IT!!!

Yup...Those 1900's were tough times...

My son calls records old fashioned CD's and typewriters Manual Word Processors.  He is not saying it as a joke, that is how he perceives them.

Why does everything seem more nostalgic looking back? Is it human nature to romanticize the past, even though we didn't think it was that great while we were living it?

Fun post, though! Merry Christmas.

William,

We could do some repairs on our own cars, a kid could go places without their parents being in sight and not be in fear of being kidnapped or worse (usually), and you could get a full sized candy bar for a nickle. (Some of you are too young to know about those days first hand.)

Hi! William,

Regardless of what some of the younger people think, I did think it was great then because it was!  We could ride our bikes all over town, go out on Halloween without worry for our parents (or us), watch the Wonderful World of Disney all together, buy a Delaware Punch for a nickle, and get four slices of real American cheese after school at the little market up the hill for my after school snack...among dozens of other wonderful things.  I think unless you are old enough to remember growing up watching Leave it to Beaver, Andy Griffith, Father Knows Best, and more (and not as reruns), you will never know what you missed!

Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself and the pictures!

Ah, yes, the perspective of age. What young people will eventually get...if they can ever survive long enough and develop the fortitude that older generations had to endure.

My wife was talking to her five year old grand daughter one day and told her that when she was her age that they didn't even have a television. Her grand daughter followed up with this question "But grandma, what did you plug your VCR into"? Now kids wonder what a VCR is. At least the clock isn't flashing 12:00 on mine!

I used to think Dick Tracy had the best gadget in the world with his fantastic WRIST RADIO to call head quarters with.....wonder if Dick could use a BLACKBERRY? Just a little more advanced than his old standby.

How many of you even remember Dick Tracy....and his wrist radio?

We had to wait for years once the movie came out before we could watch it on VCR's.

Our neice and nephew always say, can you pause the TV when we are on a "live feed" because at home they have a DVR.  Entertainment on demand.

William

At least you had a pencil! We walked 6 miles uphill and carved our lessons on slate or stone tablets. Homework was tough, where do you think the term 'ton of homework' came from?

Bill, that's funny but true about the 1900's comment.  It was rough back then!  Transistor radios no MP3 Players, 9" black & white TV were the big deal!  Heck not everyone even had a TV when I was a kid!

Congrats on the feature!

What will our kids remember?  No 2 years are the same, not even 6 months stays the same.  They expect change and are easily bored.

I'm glad I was born when I was.
