Bellingham -- The Tallest Christmas Tree In The World

By

The city of Bellingham, for many years after WWII, competed with other municipalities to see who would have the largest downtown Christmas tree. I remember some of that excitement as a kid. It was the 1950's and there would be a huge city Christmas tree by the Whatcom County Museum or by what is now the bus terminal downtown or on Railroad Avenue and Chestnut Street.

In 1948 and 1949, the city had a couple of the tallest trees ever.  In 1949, Bellingham boasted that the tree was, in fact, the tallest in the world. It was 153 feet tall -- as tall as a 15-story building. I could not find a photo of that particular tree. But here is a historical photo of the tree from 1948, which was 134 feet tall.

The tree looks a bit lanky, but I remember some of those brightly lit city sponsored trees. They looked wonderful in color. This tree in the photo below is not from Bellingham but it does, in my mind, capture some of the splendor of my childhood memories.

This morning my adult daughter and I went out shopping. We went to the heart of downtown Bellingham to see what we could find as far as the city keeping this holiday tradition alive. We drove around quite a bit, in the core area, and I have posted below two photos of the the most colorful lights or decorations that we could find that were sponsored by the city this year.

I guess that, sometimes, those grand holiday traditions from childhood only survive in one's memory.

There are some traditions, Steve, that might only survive in one's memories...  like American religious traditions.

Steve - That is truly funny.  The picture from the 40's is nostalgic - the current ones are just plain sad.

Jason,

I think it is the new austerity budget of this era.

I'm happy to say our town green has a nice tree and lights. The main street has wreaths on the light poles.

Our memories some how always seem better than reality and that is okay in my mind.

Stephen:  I think the tree in the second photo is absolutely gorgeous.  Unfortunately I do not have any memories of Christmas trees from my childhood.  That was so long ago... trees had not yet been invented.  And... I don't mean "Christmas" trees... just trees, period.  Sheesh, I feel old.  LOL.

Steve, I know why the trees are no longer put up.  Christmas just rolls around faster than it used to.  Perhaps the days are still the same but they go by faster.  You have to agree with this!!

I'm very lucky that my town is providing some wonderful holiday traditions and memories for my 3 kids.  There is no shortage of Christmas celebration or decoration around here. And funny, I live right next to Bellingham, MA.  Though if I am not mistaken, Bellingham, WA is very well known for it's Victorians.  Am I remembering the correct town?  -Marian

What an amzing picture from the 1940's!  I didn't know anyone had decorated trees that tall.  In this area some of the cities have put up those light-deisgns-on-poles (one is really funny with alternating angels and stars and Christmas designs... and then two dreidels stuck on random poles!) -- no city trees that I know of. New York City still does a good one, though! :)

Shoshana,

That building behind the tree is still there and it is high. If there was still a tree like that in town, versus stop lights, I would have Nutsy climb it for you and take a photo from the top.

Steven, Cool history about your area. Yes, sometimes incidents like this live forever in the chasms of your mind. (I would have liked to have seen Nutsy's view though)
