On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:
seven swans a swimming, six geese a laying, five golden rings, four colly birds,
three french hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.
Ancient Egyptians believed that swans were symbols of immortality. Some old British and Celtic myths spoke of dead loved ones turning into swans, with gold or silver chains around their necks. In medieval times, King Edward was bestowed his knighthood over two swans that were decorated with crowns and gold nets. Ever since then and continuing on today, swans have been associated with royalty, going so far as only royalty being allowed to own them.
In Christianity, the seven swans symbolize the seven sacraments or the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
