Do you know the statistics regarding the number of church fires caused by candlelight services?

What about the number of injuries and/or deaths?   The Homewood Alabama fire chief hadChurch Candle announced that he intends to enforce a little known fire ordinance on Christmas Eve requiring a permit to hold a candlelight service.  Worse than that, the churches holding candlelight services will be required to hire 4 off duty fireman (regardless of the size of the church or number of persons participating) to be on-site at a cost of $100 each.  This is an extraordinarily high cost especially for the smaller churches considering the candles stay lit for around 1 1/2 - 2 minutes.

Many questions have been raised, such as what can an off-duty fireman do other than call the fire department and help evacuate?  What is the actual risk factor here? Is it any more dangerous than lighting a cigarette...filling a gas tank...having candles burning on tables in a restaurant or on a birthday cake?  Here in the Bible belt, there may not be enough off duty fire fighters to accommodate the 4 per church to every church.  Then again, there is a high probably that many of the services would have a fireman in attendance. Without statistics to support the danger, could this just be a way to generate bonus pay for fire fighters who are not working on Christmas Eve without it affecting the chief's budget?

Check out the full article.  As for me, I am a member of a church in Vestavia Hills and we will have our Christmas Eve candle light service without the additional burden of hiring fire fighters.  I believe God and a little common sense are all we need to have a safe celebration of the birth of Christ!

Merry Christmas to all!

Wow my church sits 5,000 and it's always packed to the rafters for Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. Now I'm thinking I should sit close to an exit door. 5.000 candles??!!!!!!!!!! Yikes!

Google it and see, I don't there is anymore dangerous than being down town and getting caught in a cross fire between your fire chief and his donut run. Sounds like he just has a problem with candlelight Christmas.

I have never ever heard of a church burning down due to candlelight services. My church burned down once, but due to vandals. It also blew away in a tornado once. I think they should focus more on electrical issues in churches than worry over the candles.

Scott - I think the chief has gone overboard.  I can't find any info on the Internet about any fires started as a result of a candlelight service.  The candle related fires info I found were those caused by unattended candles in residences.

Charles - I think the chances of getting injured by an emergency vehicle are much greater.  He claims he attends a very large church (thousands of members) and has informed them they must comply.  The $$ will be a drop in the bucket for a church of that size.  However, it is a matter of principal for me.  it seems unnecessary and think of the good that could be done with the $400..like food and warm clothing for the needy or homeless.  We're having very cold & rainy weather for our area.

I told my husband about this. He had 2 interesting comments: 1. "Good, if there is a problem, they can walk over and blow out the candle, "Whooo"  2. If that doesn't work, they can use the hose they always carry with them. Surely that would put out a candle fire"

Amy - Exactly! Vandalism, arson, tornadoes, hurricanes...those are the real threats.

Amy- I like your husband's comments.  An "off-duty" fire fighter is going to be no more effective at putting out a candle fire than an usher or any other responsible adult in attendance.

Sounds like the government is trying to figure out a way to regulate Christmas... must have something to do with Jesus...what do you think?

Merry Christmas,

John - They are definitely regulating it in Homewood!

Trey - The government is getting involved in egalangaleverything possible.  But like you, who'd of ever thought of candles???

Leslie - You're right.  We are in unsafe conditions everyday....some more than others.  Some things are worth the risk...like celebrating the birth of Christ.

Ricki - I agree.  The service at my church was wonderful and there were no problems related to the candles.  It went smoothly as usual.

John - Seems everyone was safe.  There were no reported church fires in the Birmingham area at the churches with and those without of duty fire fighters.
