Are your readers color blind and wearing trifocals?

Our office gets several weekly newsletters, one of which has a report about the reading habits of the general public.

  1. Make everything easy — easy to read, easy to navigate.... Easy, easy, easy. People searching a web site tend to be "brutally efficient." As soon as they run into a speed bump, they're off to somewhere else. For them, even little speed bumps become roadblocks.

  2. Dark colors on a white background are most popular, and if you really want to be sure that you reach all the population, use black on white to reach those who are color blind.

  3. DON'T USE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS FOR SENTENCES, ESPECIALLY REALLY LONG SENTENCES LIKE THIS ONE WILL BE AS SOON AS I CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT MORE TO SAY TO MAKE IT A REALLY LONG SENTENCE.

Throughout history, ALL CAPS has been reserved for headlines and short advertising copy.

On the Internet, using ALL CAPS is the same as yelling. DO YOU REALLY NEED TO YELL AT YOUR READERS?

Use bold, italics, underlining, and bigger fonts to make your statement, and if you can't come up with a title that says anything, YELLING IT ISN'T GOING TO MAKE IT BETTER.

The other thing about ALL CAPS is that it is difficult to read, i.e., NOT EASY! The human eye and brain have been taught to read words and sentences. This is the basis behind speed reading, so when you force your readers to slow down to try to read words which their eyes and mind are not familiar, you tire them out and make them leave.

  4. It's natural to try to make your site look exciting because you want to be seen as exciting, but again this year, tests indicate that boring — i.e., easy to read — is what people actually want on a website.

  5. Use larger fonts for your older prospects. Many computers and software now let you change the size of your screen, but then your readers start having to scroll left to right and up and down. You lose them.

You don't have to put everything on your home page. A well-organized home page with links to other well-organized pages just one click deep is more effective than the home page that takes five minutes to scroll to the bottom.

Hi Russel, cute picture of Zoey by the way.  I think one of the main reasons that people use all caps is it is so easy, you don't have to think about upper or lower case, but it is annoying that some people put all caps on MLS listings.  It is hard to read.

Russel,

Good post as usual. All good common sense suggestions. I especially like # 1.

Russel, I agree. Good post as usual. For me, I get a bit tired - learning this new language.

I imagined back when I didn't know what a "comma" was or an "ellipsis." It was hard to learn when to use a semi-colon vs. a comma.

Good post.  #1 is the most important--the more easy things are, the more people will pay attention.

Hi Russel, if boring is better in respect to websites, then we can apply our excess creativity to other pursuits in life!  All the best!

Hi, Russel. You're right....less is MORE!

I love the way people are using "spot color" in their posts now; it's a more effective way to create emphasis than using caps.

Hi Russel: Great tips.  I think I may have to look at the new website I am working on and make sure I followed them.

:)

Good tips, Russel.  I learned about the all caps early on when someone asked why I was yelling :)  It was about the same time I was trying to figure out what LOL meant....

It's true, people are generally looking for sound bites and quick reads.  Too much information only chases them away.  I know if I open a post and see it is really long, I go looking for another one.  If I go to a website and it is cluttered with too much information or has music playing, I leave.

Hey, Liz - The only thing worse, I think, is the person who doesn't use commas, periods, or any other punctuation marks. Zoey the Cool Cat wants to know if you've ever seen a picture of her that is not cute. LOL

Hey, Ted - And people on the Internet rarely have a car with a great suspension system to get over those little speed bumps.

Hey, Janice - It does take a little effort, but the good things in life do.

Hey, Jim - It's funny that people will pay attention to the simple things but then when they go looking for a way to do something, they'll pick the most difficult way.

Hey, Silvia - I like your thinking.

Hey, Leslie - Spot color is very effective and creating emphasis.

Hey, Matt - If you need constructive criticism, you know where to go.

Hey, Carole - The guy who introduced me to the Internet back in 1994 told me while he was setting me up with an AOL account: "Just don't type in all caps. People will think you're yelling at them."

Hey, Anna - I've been posting to our collaborative outside blog. I hope you've noticed.

Hey, Sharon - I hate the web sites that have automatic playing that you can't turn off. That turns me off.

Hey, Carra - It's just that web sites have become so easy to make that everyone thinks they are the best website designer now.

Hey, Kathy - If you need constructive criticism, I'm right here.
