Weekly Inspiration - How's Your Filter Doing?
I recently went to a ‘Sunday Celebration’ where a fairly large group of us gathered to give thanks. After being there for about 20 minutes or so, we were told to sit comfortably as we prepared for a group meditation. Most of the people shifted in their seats, including me, making sure we truly were comfortable before the meditation began.
And then I thought to myself; Why wasn’t I sitting comfortably before the meditation? Was I sitting comfortably before I was told to? Well, yes… I was sitting comfortably. But as everyone else did, we listened to the message that was given and responded without taking too much time to think about it.
While this was a pretty unobtrusive message and who shouldn’t try to be more comfortable, it got me thinking about how many message we hear on a daily basis that we don’t take time or have time to question. And what are those messages telling us?
The messages can, and will, come from all different sources; your friends, family, co-workers, Facebook, Twitter, and the news. Some of these sources we can control, but with the times being as they are, we are constantly bombarded with information from all around us. It’s becoming increasingly important that we take the time to consider the source of the information, the value we decide to put on it and how we will choose to process the information.
I was having a conversation with a friend last night and I had told her that I thought she should consider doing some videos because she’s got such a great personality, so energetic and I’m sure people would really enjoy hearing her views on things. Well, she looked at me like I was speaking some foreign language. At first I thought she was scared of being on camera, but I soon realized it was something that went much deeper.
The very people that she surrounded herself with, the people that she had moved to help, her family, were the same people sending her messages telling her she was unhappy, negative and even angry. I asked her if she would describe herself that way. She said NO! and asked me for my honest opinion. I had already given it to her. She’s full of life, hope and energy. She can put a smile on almost anyone’s face and in fact had just got done telling me a story of some people she had met on a plane and they were all laughing together.
We all have to be responsible to maintain our own filters in life. We have to choose what information we process and delete the stuff that doesn’t resonate with us. But if we do a bit of purposeful work on deciding who we spend our time with and what information is coming our way, our filter may not have to work so hard and we can spend time focusing in the positive, informative, productive information.
Happy Filtering!
