Charlottesville Virginia Digs Out From A Record Two Feet Of Snow

By
Real Estate Agent with Gayle Harvey Real Estate, Inc.

Today Charlottesville Virginia slowly digs out from a record two feet of snow!

For an area that normally get 6-8 inches of snow for an entire winter, 24 inches at one time is an unheard of occurance.  The snow began falling at about 5:00 Friday evening and by 11:00 pm there was 11 inches of snow in my yard.  And it continued to snow all night...and it continued to snow all of the next day...until when it finally stopped there was 24 inches of snow on the ground.

Two inches of snow can cause Charlottesville schools to close, so this much snow has paralized the area.  I have spent the day shoveling out my driveway and watching cars and trucks get stuck in the road in front of my home.  I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first snow plow.  The snow on my roof is so heavy that it has torn off one of my gutters.

Central Virginia has been in a very wet weather pattern all year.  If it continues throughout the winter, this snowfall may just be a preview of what is to come.  The week ahead is forecast to be cold so this snow should stick around til Christmas giving Charlottesville its first white Christmas in many years.

Beautiful pictures, Pam!  I'll bet the horses are wondering, "WHAT is going on??"  We had our snow for the season. Very unusual for Houston, TX...it snowed last winter...and a few weeks ago as well. Normally we get snow once every 5-6 years! ;)

Great pictures - Charlottesville really got whacked. The snowstorm was very odd - Charlottesville got 2 feet, DC got 20 inches, New York City only got 10 inches!

Pam..Loved the photos..glad that you have stepped up & can enjoy the gift of whiteness; one trick to roof snow--IF YOU CAN REACH it, turn a large broom over & scrape along the gutter; just be certain to jump out of the way OR duct tape cuffs to your gloves & tie something tightly around your head & face. It is fun to do, but can cause snow to get placed un-desired. Just some Michigan hints--another one, Please KEEP the snow right where it is. I bet your horse pals will also enjoy the novelty of prancing in the snow. If YOU haven't do so yet, do make at least one Snow-Angel. Merry Christmas to you & yours--stay safe.

Pam, the snow is beautiful but it does take quite a bit of work to keep the drive and sidewalks shoveled.  Be safe and since you have done all that work, enjoy it!

The photo looks incredible.  We did get quite a bit in NOVA, but it was so pretty.

Sonja - This is more than our usual average for the whole winter.  I'm a little worried about what the rest of the winter will have in store.

Lise - My daughter in Boston only got about 10 inches as well.  Crazy!

Barb - The horses were glad to finally get out after two days in the barn while the snow was falling.

Sharon - Way too much shoveling, but I enjoyed the time at home.  I am usually constantly on the go so I took advantage of the time snowed in to get my home decorated and ready for Christmas guests.

Ellen- I was beautiful.  I would have like to be a little more mobile to get out and take some pictures.
