Brazos County Nature Show

By

If you really look close even in a seemingly bland geographic location you can find beauty in mother nature. The diversity of plant life, wildlife and trees in the Brazos Valley area is amazing.  Here are just a few samples of what I am referring to.

Red Cedars: These are beautiful trees and are cousins of the giant Redwoods on the west coast . These are the same trees used to make wood used in cedar closets.  The wood is very  aromatic and can be beautiful when it comes out of older specimens like these 2 giants.  I would guess the larger of the two trees  is 70 feet tall. They offer sanctuary and food to wildlife. The small blue berries attract Cedar Waxwings one of my personal favorite birds.

Home For Raccoons, squirrels, Wood Ducks, and a host of other wildlife. Most ancient oak trees in our area eventually hollow out.  I first noticed this fine specimen with a great entry door 30 years ago. The tree has survived and continues to be a great nesting place. I was able to get the camera inside the doorway  and look down inside.  Could Hobbits reside here?

Inside the tree!

Gourmet Food For  Deer,  feral hogs, squirrels and ducks these small native pecans along with hickory nuts and acorns  are a major source of food that is  preferred.  Notice the wild hog track next to the pecans. Some of these hogs are descendants of some some wild Russian boars that were stocked for hunting in this area 30 years ago. Most of the hogs are feral domestics however. A local expert says 26,000 feral pigs are born in Texas each night. They can breed  by 6 months of age and have several large litters a year. They are a real problem for Texas.  Do the math. We could feed the planet with them!

Trey, those are some great photos!  We have an occasional red cedar tree out here, but they're rare.  I only know of two, there is always something beautiful to be found in nature!

Trey:  26,000 feral pigs born EACH NIGHT in Texas?  That's amazing.  How many are causualities each day?  There would have to a stat for that too.  Otherwise, I'll begin to fear that the pigs will be taking over your state.  Yikes!

It is better because they are on an all natural diet.

Tony

Gosh I did not know they grew up your way.

Caron.

That is one of my favorit trees of all time. If it dies I may cut it down and preserve the window.

Chris Ann

They are taking over and most folks don't know it!

Incredible photos Trey!  I especially like those center pictures with the hole in the tree, and what was existing within.  You have provided a fresh perspective.
