On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:
nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a swimming, six geese a laying, five golden rings,
four colly birds, three french hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.

Music and dancing have been a big part of celebrations for centuries.  Early on, dancing was considered "sinful".  Eventually, though, dancing was accepted as a popular form of entertainment for royalty.  These dances were called "caroles".  In Medieval times, dancing was done in a circular motion.  The church decided, however, that dancing was sinful if done in the wrong direction.  If you danced in a clockwise direction (to the right), it was good.  If you danced in a counter-clockwise direction (to the left), it was bad.  Many non-Christians danced in a counter-clockwise motion around a central fire that represented the sun, which was an important part of many dances of the time, to acknowledge the sun's direction throughout the day (east to west).  The Christian church eventually stopped banning dancing and embraced it as an important part of celebrations.  The dancing "caroles" were used to tell stories and transitioned over the years into songs, thus, the Christmas caroles we know today.

In Christianity, the nine ladies dancing represent the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.
