Networking. Who Do You Know?

Man Making ListThat's right kids. It's time to make our list and check it twice. No, not for who's been naughty or nice?

Where is your business in 2010 going to come from? Do you need some new opportunities? New people? New connections?

Maybe you need to do some Networking! Not the door to door knocking type, but getting out to some business events and meeting other business people that you might be able to refer business to, and in turn, they refer potential Buyers and Seller's back to you! Now there's a novel idea, eh?

But, as you head out the door to your next networking event, perhaps you should have a plan. What do you really want to accomplish, and how are you going to go about it?

  • Who Do you Want to Meet?
  • Network, DON'T Sell! The idea is to make connections, and then follow up from there!
  • Introduce Others! It's much easier to make conversation if you already know someone. And if there are two of you, and you see someone standing alone, go over and introduce yourselves. A great way for BOTH of you to make a new contact.
  • Remember, not everyone is going to be a prospect. You will be able to figure out that there is just not going to be a connection. Move on.
  • Speaking of moving on, try to limit your conversation to 8-10 minutes. If you talk to just a couple people the whole evening, you won't make many contacts or grow your list!
  • Follow up, Follow up, Follow up! What can I say? Don't expect that if you meet a person one time, you are their real estate contact for life. You have to build that relationship.

Another good idea is to meet and/or know the organizer of the event. Try to meet them before or after the event and thank them for putting it together. This can put you on the top of the list for other events, maybe even a VIP event that you might not otherwise be invited to!

If you attend an event on a regular basis, it's just natural to hang with the people you know.....NOT! Now, you and that other person can team up to meet other people, but don't just hang with the people you know. Remember, our goal is to make new contacts! Make sure if you see someone that is new, make them feel welcome. Go one step further and invite a new person that you think could benefit from the event.

Where to Network?

Well, if you ask most real estate agents/brokers, they will tell you everywhere! And to some extent, that is true. Whether you are having your oil changed in your car, picking up your dry cleaning or visiting the vet with your dog, there is always an opportunity to meet someone!

One place you might look, is Networking For Professsionals (NFP). I host one of their local events here in Atlanta, and even wrote a blog about it the beginning of this year. NFP is truly what it says....networking. Not a bunch of guys or girls looking for a date (ah, come on, you all know you have been to those types of events before) but professionals looking to network. Be sure to check out their website, they host events in various cities around the country!

In fact, if you are in Atlanta, our next two events are Shakers and Stirrers on January 19 and High Speed Networking on February 3rd.

As you put your plans together for '10, make sure networking is a part of them. You always need to be expanding your network!

I like the tips and being able to go in with a plan.  If someone acts like they don't want to talk to you just move on to the next.  8 to 10 minutes, timer in head, move on like musical chairs.  Got it!!!

Have a great new year.

Sounds good but it all depends how you use networking to get you where you want to be in 2010. Most people go to networking parties/events trying to sell themselves from the spot. Instead, networking should be approached as a formal meeting connecting people and not just yourself.

Happy Holidays to Everyone and have a Happy New Year Celebration and hope that 2010 brings you lots of connections through the Business Social Network arena.

Thom,  These are definitely a great source.  There are really so many places, it's amazing.  Also, great advice to try to meet a bunch of folks than just three or four over a meeting.  A lot of folks stick to just a few.  All the best, Michelle

Great info!  It is so easy to stuck with the same groups at the monthly networking meeting.  I also find most people that go to these events stick in their groups or "clique".  It is almost awkward sometimes to walk up to a group to introduce yourself and 5 pair of eyes look at you like why are you here.  LOL!!  I find it funny sometimes and introduce myself and move on.

You are so right - it doesn't matter WHERE you go, you can network!  I think real estate clients come from everywhere.  Basically just live your life, follow a marketing plan and then business will come!  Thanks for sharing

I like this post. Very relevant yet not emphasized enough by agents. One has to get out there and be deliberate about meeting people at church, PTA, Scouts, Chamber, or whatever. If they don't know you're in real estate, who's gonna call you?

I like the tip of having somebody that you know to whom to introduce a new person. It is easier when you already know someone.

Diana and Barbara:  You can always enjoy the networking event, make contacts and follow up. But the "go for the kill, hard sell" is always a turnoff...at least in my book. And I am amazed at those that do not follow up! Interesting!

Michelle and Shelly: I think the key to networking is the follow up! Even if you wow somebody when you meet them in person, and then never follow up, you are going to lose out!

Happy Holidays!

Hi Thom!  You're definitely right about the networking aspect and following-up!  Just like in person, you have to follow-through--feed that relationship for it will never bloom if you don't!

Have a wonderful Sunday...

Sajy: That happens all the time at events. It's NETWORKING! Meet new people and introduce others to others. What goes around comes around!

Emily: Thanks!

Andrew: And you have to remind them over and over!

Aaron: Active Rain is awesome! I just got a referral this week from another agent!

Gary: It is indeed...

Christine: It's like going to a party cold turkey. If you know someone there and you work together, you will get more out of the event!

Christopher and Lanre: I need to check into the MeetUps more....thanks for the reminder!
