Home for the Holidays - More Than a Feeling

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes and Gardens RE Shore and Country Properties RES.0781237

(I wrote this in December 2009. I love this story. It's MY story. As Christmas Eve 2010 approaches and we prepare for our party with family and friends, I always think of when we found our house and the warm, homey feel it still has over 25 years later.)

Home for the Holidays - More Than a Feeling

My buyers always ask for my opinion and I am not shy about giving one.

One question that comes up often is "Is this the right house for me/us?

This is what I tell them.

How does it FEEL to you?  Can you see yourself living here? How would your furnishings look in this space?  Are you comfortable with what you hear? (Traffic? Quiet? Barking dogs?) home for the holidays shelton ctIs the space adequate for your needs? Etc....

THEN I tell them MY story - whether they want to hear it or not.  Actually, they always do. Just kidding.

Twenty five years ago my husband and I bought an acre of land with the intent of building a house. We were just a few days short of signing the contract.  We decided to take a ride up to the lot and just look around one Sunday afternoon in December.

After leaving,  we saw an open house sign on a lovely dead end street.  I told my husband - it's almost 5:00 - the agent is ready to leave.  He said, let's go take a quick look.  We pulled into the driveway and said, ‘Wow, this is a really nice house, and it's a little different'. (I like different).

So we went inside and my husband knew the agent and they got into a conversation. (I was not in RE back then)  I made my way around the house and emerged a few minutes later.  (I can still remember the feeling I had when I took that first look.)

I exclaimed, "This house is a HOME.  It just FEELS right."  I proceeded to look over the open floor plan and the sunken living room which I thought would be THE place to have parties and celebrate the holidays.  It just looked like a holiday house. It was more than a feeling-- it was an instinctive reaction and response.

home for the holidays shelton ctLong story short - we did not purchase the lot and we have been in our HOME for almost 25 years.  Every party, every life event, even mundane daily chores have been special in our HOME.  It felt right then, and it feels even more right NOW, all these years later.

When my buyers finally decide on the house for them, I always ask them, DOES IT FEEL RIGHT TO YOU?  After hearing my story earlier in the process, they respond affirmatively and are happy and secure with their decision.

My house - my home - I love it - and I love helping others find their HOME!   As my family and I prepare for our annual Christmas party in a few days, we again will know that we are truly HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS - where we love to be!

A blessed holiday and happy, healthy, and prosperous 2010 to all!

P.S.  Did anyone catch that we purchased our house on an open house AND right before Christmas?  Who said open houses don't bring in serious buyers?

Hi Barbara...And who says no one buys during the holidays?

Buyers are always asking me where is the best place for them to buy around our lake.  I always tell them they will know when we find it.  Whether it is llot or a house it has to "feel" right, it has to tell you this is it.

Congratulations on your purchase 25 years ago.  May you enjoy it for at least another 25.

Hi Kate --  You're right.. Buyers will 'know' when it is right.

I can't believe it's almost 25 years already.  Time sure does march on when you're having fun. Thanks for the good wishes.  Happiest holidays to you.

Barbara...We never like to give our opinion because everyone's taste is so different and everyone has different needs. But it's so true though, if the house is right...it becomes a home!

Happy Holidays!

Larry and Sheila -- I like to give my opinion on whether I think the house fits their requirements as told to me -- or not.  As an objective observer, I can point things out that they may not be thinking or may not realize because they get caught up in the emotional aspect of purchasing.   I do not offer my opinion otherwise for the very reason you stated.  I do want them to be fortunate to find a home, not just a house, as I did.

Happiest Holidays to you also!

Barbara, what a lovely post story!!  I'm just like you...  in fact my clients can't help but know how I feel because my expressions usually say it all.  But that feeling?  Yep you're right on - same way for us when we found this home - which we refer to as our happy place.  Isn't wonderful when you love your home so much you don't want to get away!!..

Merriest of Christmas wished to you and all your friends and family as they gather in your happy place this Holiday!

Pamela

Hi Pamela -- I know what you mean about the expressions!

Your situation sounds similar to mine.  I am preparing for my Christmas party right now and I can't wait to have everyone gather and enjoy our time together.  My late sister-in-law used to refer to my house as the 'Christmas House' -- not because it looked like a Christmas Vacation house but because it just has that certain holiday festive feel and spirit. I just love it.

You, too, have a merry Christmas in your 'happy place' and a healthy and prosperous 2010.

Picking a home is more often that not a very emotional decision. I know I have never talked someone into buying a home and never will.

Bill -- You are absolutely right.  I am the same way.  I like my clients to make an informed decision and certainly never under duress!

It is true that there has to be a connection from the buyer to the house - great post!
