It doesn't take much common sense to know in order to drive safely we need to keep our hands on the wheel and our eyes on the road! DUH!! Keeping our wits sharp as we maneuver through traffic our focus must be on what is going on around us. 

There are pedestrians, cyclists, construction, weather conditions that need our undivided attention.  The reality is many drivers engage in distracting activities: talking on a cell phone, eating, fussing with radio stations, talking to their kids and now texting.

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration report in 2008 nearly 6,000 people were killed and more than 500,000 injured in crashes involving distracted driving.

TEXTING is one of the most dangerous distracted-driving behaviors.  It takes drivers hands off the wheel and their eyes and minds off the road.  The city of Austin recently passed an ordinance, effective January 2, which bans all drivers from texting while driving.

Nationwide, 18 states and the District of Columbia currently ban all drivers from texting.  AAA Texas supports all efforts to prohibit texting while driving, a move they feel will save lives and make our daily travel less stressful.

We, as real estate agents, are acutely aware of how much texting goes on.  Remember we carry huge liability when showing property.  Texting and talking on the phone while driving are two of the most dangerous behaviors one can entertain.  We need to behind the movement to save lives and cut down on needless accidents.

I heard a commercial on the radio saying texting while driving was as dangerous as driving after having something like 6 drinks.

Dorie, I couldn't agree more.  There is nothing more dangerous than texting and driving.  Even today amidst the fallout of the huge snow fall, people are driving along snow bound streets yapping away on their cell phones.

I have heard the same thing. I listened to someone who counted from 1-10! Think about having your eyes off the road and your mind distracted for that long!!

It amazes me how people can't wait until getting out from behind the wheel to talk..nothing is that important. Especially now with so many people on the road we need to keep focused on our driving!

Too many people are doing it, thinking they are still under control (too many people feel the same way about drinking and driving).  It will take an accident or worse to get people to realize just how dangerous it really is.  I think the right thing is happening where the laws are getting stricter so that people will not do it just to avoid the fines.

Dorie, Living where I do, there is a lack of internet and phone service - so generally no talking on the cell or texting would work--- still, in town, I cannot imagine trying to do that and drive in traffic, it's just idiotic! I like the bumper sticker, it's very true.

I will be driving down the road in the morning and see a young gal blow drying her hair, smoking a cigarette and drinking a bottle of water buy we are all humid and we re trying to drive!! Multitasking gone too far!!
