It's Properly Installed But Is It Safe?

House In Bubble

Being interviewed by a prospective client I'm often asked whether or not I will be able to tell them if they home they are buying is safe to live in. The most important purpose of a Metro Detroit Home Inspection is in fact to determine whether or not various components are properly installed and safe. Of course properly installed and safe do not always go hand in hand. Outside of building your home inside a protective bubble there are general safety tips  every homeowner should follow. Information on home safety tips can typically be found on your insurance provider website.

Double Keyed Door

An example of a properly installed component that is not necessarily safe is a double keyed lock. The intent is to provide the occupants with added security of having to unlock the door from both sides. A person wanting to get in, or out, would need the key. This of course isn't a problem until someone needs to get out in a hurry.

In a fire emergency this could be a problem even for a healthy adult. For a child it would be next to impossible to open this door. The best course of action here is to remove the double keyed lock and to replace it with a deadbolt lock that can be opened from the interior. The above photo was taken during an Ypsilanti Michigan Home Inspection where four entry/exit doors had double keyed locks installed.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Vince the double key lock has always been one that bothered me. It may be good when you are not home on a glass door, but when you are home it certainly isnt safe.  I chose one that has a single lever that also opens the deadbolt so you can exit safely and quickly if need be.  Reality is- if a thief wants in, they can get in pretty darn easilly, and they dont have to use a door!

Robert - I agree. If a person really wants to get in a door lock will not stop them.

Thanks for stopping by.

Interior keyed locks are not allowed on the main egress door (usually the front door).

The 'other' doors are allowed to have them.

They don't belong on the inside of the home for all the reasons you stated. Misguided attempts by homeowners to thwart thieves.

Good article Vince,

I run into this especially in older homes.  Many times they also have security doors that are double keyed.  I always recommend that these types locks be replaced.  Go NACHI

Not much use in having lock without a key on a door by a window but agree with the safety factor.

Darren - This home had two rear entrance doors into a mud room and that were installed this way along with the entrance door into the home along with the garage entrance door. Very unusual setup.

James - This home was owned by the original owners. It's probably been that way for years with no problem. Either way I always call it out for replacement.

Gene - Exactly, it's not like this is a solid door. The double keyed lock is pretty useless here.

Ron - This home was built in the 50's and like you I never see this on newer construction.
