Ma'am . . . Put DOWN the Cell Phone and Step Away from the Steering Wheel

By
Industry Observer with RETIRED / State License is Inactive Inactive License Oregon

"Hands-free driving" is an oxymoron.

If your hands were really "FREE" they'd not be holding the steering wheel.  And you have GOT to have your hands on the steering wheel at all times . . . perferably the 10 o'clock / 2 o'clock positions!

But be WARNED!!  Starting  2010 the State of Oregon will require all drivers to use a hands-free device if they use a mobile communication device while driving in the state.  Violation of the law is a Class D traffic violation punishable with a fine of up to $90.

Here's a list of States and their current laws!

Thanks for the list Carla. I'm guilty of talking on the phone while driving. We have a law against texting while driving if under 21. It should be for everyone.

I have a blue tooth built into my trucks sound system, voice activated. Works well with IPHONE. Need to get it working.

That way I can talk on my phone's bluetooth and text on my wifes. LOL

Carla - My husband and I were just discussing this the other day.  I don't necessarily think holding the phone is the issue, it's getting wrapped up in the conversation and not paying attention.  Happy Holidays!

Carla -

Nick (#6) is obviously so into multi-messaging he might be the real multi-tasking Santa.

It is distracting enough to talk on the phone with someone IN the car with you, much less talk with someone while holding a cell phone.

Even with the bluetooth earpiece, I find it still quite distracting....so when I'm driving, I just let the phone continue to ring. That's what voice mail is for. If I'm on a regular street and not the highways, I will pull over to talk. But otherwise, I'm glad the laws are in place to prevent talking AND texting on the cell phone while driving. The lives we save may be our own.

Have a wonderful, prosperous and SAFE new year.

Hi Jim . . . St. Nick really does know how to multi-task from his sleigh.

Hey Pacita -- "That's what voice mail is for."  No truer words!  Good idea to pull over.  Thanks for your comments.  And you, too, wonderful, prosperous . . .

Wow, great list! I have to admit, I didn't really know all my states laws for cell phones. Now I do, thanks to you! I think texting and driving should be banned all together.
