Ending the Christmas Feast With A Yule Log

Yule Log McLean, VA Tysons Corner Craig Richardson

Our Christmas meal has several traditions passed down from both my wife's family and mine, in particular the standing rib roast, Yorkshire pudding, and the children drinking from their silver cups given to each at their birth.  One tradition we started ourselves was ending the great feast with a "Yule Log," made by a local pastry shop.  It's amazingly good and the kids love it because its very festive for the occasion.

"Yule" comes from Germany, a term used to describe their pagan Winter festival.  The "Yule Log" was a large piece of wood dragged in from the cold outdoors and put in the middle of the celebration for heat, light, and other symbols associated with the Winter event.  In recent centuries, bakers started creating a chocolate cake to look like a Yule Log.  Hence the tradition was born.

Merry Christmas and enjoy!

It's funny a tradition of a celebration long gets turned into a pastry dish for us all to eat. :) Sounds like some great traditions you guys have. Merry Christmas

That's the kind of Yule log that I can tolerate.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2010, and beyond.

Happy Holidays!

Traditions are wonderful, what I like about yours Craig is that you took a tradition from each side of the family and added your own.  BTW, a chocolate and cream yule log is one of my favourites!  Happy New Year.
