Church Bells Ring Throughout Your Life

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. . . . Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." --John Donne

During the holiday season in particular, many church bells ring out in proclamation of Christmas, church service or Mass start times or oftentimes churches in town squares, bells on the hour or even melodiously marking the half hour points. In some neighborhoods people have even complained that all the clanging and bong bonging throughout the day, particularly into the evening hours is down right annoying, particularly when hitting the nine, ten, eleven, and twelve o'clock marks.

Bell

The church bell and its bonging is a perfect metaphor for the seasons in our life. We awaken to life early in our adolescence and grow with our observations and experiences as time goes on. The bonging can be thought of as reminders and wake up calls along the way. The longer and longer bonging as we head toward the end of the day (twelve chimes) reminds us that at least life here on earth is NOT forever for us. We have to get in what we need to get in.

So as you hear the church bells of eight, nine, ten or later and think of them as possibly annoying to you, remember it is a gentle reminder that you are moving through seasons of your life and to be doing what you need to do in each season. It is afterall a terrific journey.

Gary:  Some deep thoughts from my favorite deep thinker.  The holiday season gets me thinking this way with, or without, church bells.  There's something about the holiday and getting to roll into another year that can give you that urgency to get out and do what you need to/want to while there is still time.  The years go by so quickly.

I am reminded of the Christmas Carol ...and for who the bell tolls, Mr. Scrooge got it all done in one night and counted himself lucky for the new vision shown to him. I have some shopping to do before too many more bells sound.

Gary,

Excellent metaphor.....it's strange how the older you get the more realize how many things you haven't done yet and how short life really is.

Merry Christmas!!

I think of Christmas bells as something sweet to the ears rather than the clamoring of the gong...It seems like the way we interpret the sounds and seasons of life has to do with our growth in the fruit of the Spirit...Merry Christmas Gary!

Hi Gary,

I hope I never come to think of church bells as annoying. I agree with Cherise I think of them as music to my ears.  As we get older we do start to feel the seasons of life more. All good things come to an end sometime, we just want it to be later than sooner!

Gary - This post made me smile. In the hustle of readying for Christmas, the meaning of THE GIFT we have been given gets over looked. Merry Christmas

I am sometimes reminded that if we always long for our youth without enjoying the time and age that we are in, we will go through life unhappy and miss out on a lot of things that only certain ages can appreciate and enjoy.  I promised myself that I would age gracefully.... it's not always easy... makes me grouchy sometimes... I have a birthday coming up :)

Terrific observation, Gary. There is so much negativity in our society anymore. I have been making a concerted effort to look for and enjoy a positive thought in all the things around my life. I have been amazed at how much more peaceful I feel with this attitude.
