Sofas, Slipcovers and Bread Knives-Oh My!

I know, I know; it's Christmas Eve afternoon and here I am blogging.  The house is finally ready for the annual festivities (Festivus, anyone?), but one chore really had me stumped.

Since the house has been in a perpetual state of CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome-courtesy of an AR Stager/Blogger), we haven't been able to agree on new upholstery.  So, I ordered some simple linen slipcovers from SureFit.  They've been laundered a couple of times, but today I washed them and then did the one thing I tell clients NOT to do:  I over-dried them.  Yep.

If they're 100% cotton (or the like), you're supposed to dry them 80%, then stretch them onto the furniture to finish drying and preserve the original size.  Mine were so dry, they seemed brittle and, yep, they shrank.  The wing chair cover will do, and the sofa base is fine.  The sofa back cushions also fit OK, but there was no way I was getting the three seat cushions into the one seat slipcover.  One cushion kept buckling up and over the next.  They would not lie down and play nicely with each other.

What to do?  Channeling Lisa LaPorta from HGTV, I ended up slicing off part of one of the batting-wrapped foam seat cushions with a bread knife.  Now they fit.  After all, I'll be getting new seat cushions once we decide on the new fabric!

Julia,

Too funny!  I hope the slicing didn't hurt the sofa too bad...perhaps you could have asked Santa to bring you a new one! ;o)

Ho Ho Ho! The famous Leg Lamp was purchased for a room I did at the annual Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival. I used vintage ornaments and decor, and thought the lamp would bring a smile to all. Many thanks for the alternate suggestions! Julie

Hi Julia, This reminds me of one of my favorite sayings: Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do, or do without.
