Homestyle Cooking with Mary:  Holiday Dinner for Two

Years ago going home to Grandma's house then later to Mother's house were long time family traditions.  However, life changes and evolves and now it is just Dave & I for Christmas dinner and we love it.  After my father died my mother has refused to leave her home so we visit her either before or after Christmas.  (Visit to Mother's house)  Several days before Christmas the Yonkers Clan spent two days at Peek 'n Peak Ski Resort celebrating Christmas & Dave's birthday AND skiing.

On Christmas Day the kids and grandkids who live in the Erie area come to our house fro brunch or lunch usually in waves, one family at a time on the way to their in-laws or other relatives.  By evening when the last family has left our house there is wrapping everywhere and we are exhausted.

 

Two Musts @ the Yonkers

 

Fireplace             +                   Shrimp

 

This year's menu: 

  • Two turkey thighs slow roasted with gravy (Oh, I admit the gravy came from a can)
  • Real mashed potatoes  (I still have the potato masher my father bought me years ago)
  • Corn (cut off cob and frozen a few months ago)
  • Cranberry Salad made by Mother (I bought the ingredients and she made it when we visited her before Christmas
  • Pumpkin pie (Dave's favorite, he even requests it for his birthday rather than cake) (I will post recipe later)
  • Bottle of Chardonay from my high school friend (Dave & I had dinner with Carol & her husband in San Francisco while on vacation recently)

Sounds wonderful, Mary.  My husband and I found ourselves alone one Christmas and ended up taking a cruise.  This Christmas was more fun with lots of kids and family.

We have never been totally alone except for dinner.  The kids come in waves and go on to other destinations. 

Yes, I agree it is fun with others even on vacation.  We enjoyed the two days we spent at the ski resort with the Yonkers clan.
