Some people say that the best tip for snow removal is to let someone else do it! While that is not a bad idea it isn't always practical for an able body person.
So, Here are a few tips from my Doctor friend on what the has see this winter.
1. Keep your hands out of the snow blower! Even when off, a plugged snow blower may have enough torque on the beaters and auger that when the plugged problem is remedied...the beaters may spin and take off tyour finger(s).
2. When shoveling...Lift with your legs and keep your back straight. It is even good to use a smaller shovel instead of a large one. this will help eliminate the 'stupid' part of lifting more than you are in shape for!
3. Take frequent breaks when shoveling. Doing so could save your life! Many heart attach's happen when a person that is shoveling goes to fast and does not take a break. Also, exhale when you lift the shovel full of snow. Doing so, takes a lot of pressure off of the heart.
4. Roof Snow removal. DON'T DO IT! Most roofs will hold 2 feet of wet snow and even more. Getting up on the roof can actually damage the shingles and the risk of falling off is real.(ask me, I have done that). If you don't have the right safety equipment then STAY OFF!
5. Shovel often...Don't wait until the storm is done. It is much easier to shovel 3 inches of snow several times than it is to shove 9-12 all at once.
Winter is a wonderful time of the year. Be safe!
