DE-CLUTTERING by Louise Henry, Home Staging & Home Redesign Consultant Pair Home Design
Just hearing that word used to make me cringe as almost everywhere I looked I had things that I no longer wanted in my life and these things were dragging me down emotionally. a few years ago I went thru some emotional upheaval and decided purging was a necessity and I wanted only to have things around me that reflected who I was. This is all well and good but how did I untangle myself of the items I did not like, bought on that special holiday, gifts received from family or friends etc.
I began with a commitment to change! I read books on de-cluttering, as I read I found myself being inspired to give away, donate, recycle items that I did not like any longer. Today, I am comfortable enough within myself not to feel guilty about giving away something someone gave me years past. Today my life is about being around people and things that I love and make me feel good.
I find when I work with clients that an hour is probably the most a person can handle as people have an emotional attachment to things and every home tells a story and sometimes there has been some great loss maybe a loved one, family member, spouse or maybe a divorce has transpired so please be kind to yourself start with 15 minutes per day.
Start de-cluttering with things you feel comfortable with like letting it could be old clothes, pick items to start with that you feel comfortable letting go of.
Get 3 boxes & label each one - Items to keep - Items to recycle - Items I am not sure what to do with.
I take all my clothes out of my closet and put them on my bed and try everything on one by one...
•1. Keep clothes that you LOVE and feel good wearing - color code and put back in your closet
•2. Pack away in a boxes clothes you no longer wear i.e. don't fit or like - give to thrift stores, shelters, big brothers, Salvation army there are ALWAYS people in greater need
•3. Set aside clothing your not sure about for a few more months if you don't' wear it over the next 3-6 months your probably not going to ever wear it again.
