Holiday Traditions; The Tree

 Tree

For the past several years we've had two traditions regarding our tree, one is we go out with some lifelong friends to cut one down at a tree farm.  It's usually a Sunday afternoon and involves some driving.  The first few times, I think my friend regretted inviting us as we searched for the "perfect" tree, rejecting perfectly good ones along the way.  Eventually we would find one to our liking, cut it down and either tie it on top of our car or put it in the back of their truck.

The second tradition is an accident.  This is our fourth Christmas in this house with high ceilings.  In my mind, high ceilings means a tall tree.  Tall trees don't fit easily into regular stands, so we've improvised over the years, and come to the conclusion that a stand must be attached to a base and the tree must be tied to the wall.  We thought this year's tree was not such a giant and tried again to get away without these steps, but yet again we experienced our new tradition of a falling tree.

I don't have pictures of the disasters; we've only lost a few ornaments, nothing irreplaceable.    I guess when something happens year after year, intentionally or not, it becomes a tradition.

I like your tree tradition.  Our tree tradition is get the box out of the garage and put the limbs in the base.  It actually has become a tradition.

I used to have a house with 2-story ceilings in the living and family rooms. And yes, it was a challenge to have a tree that didn't look like a sapling in the middle of the room. I still love a fresh tree....but thankfully, we have 10' ceilings now.

Have a wonderful and prosperous New  Year!

Dan...we used to do the same thing but have switched over for now...it might be good to switch back every year or so to keep the memories.

We've had artificial trees for several years now, but I do remember a time when only "real" would do.  One of my fondest memories is when our real tree feel-over of our two children and the dog one Christmas morning during the "frenzy" of exuberance.  When the tree had been righted once again, all three were clutching gifts in their hands/mouths, never missing a beat.

I've never had a tall tree, but traditions come about in all sorts of ways.

Happy New Year!
