Cranberry harvest is probably a lot different than you imagine! We are lucky to have family members with a large cranberry farm down near Long Beach, WA. So, we really enjoy going down and helping with the harvest every fall. It's become a huge family event which culminates in an awesome evening seafood feast after the berries are brought in and finalized on the last day of an approximately week long harvest process.

The Pacific NW and especially Long Beach, WA is well known for cranberry farms.
There are many cranberry farms and most of them are connected to Ocean Spray. There is much to know about growing cranberries, it's a year long job to grow and care for the cranberries. They grow in a bog...kind of a huge shallow square hole like a swimming pool. To grow cranberries it takes much attention to weed control, pests, giving the berries the correctly measured nutrition and even plant genetics and weather affects the size and taste of the berries.

In order to begin the harvest, first the cranberry bogs are filled with water from nearby sources. The water covers the berries. Then someone rides a machine that is called a "beater." It stirs up the water and brushes the berries so they release and float to the top. Then workers and family members wearing big hip waders pull boards connected together into "floats" and corral the berries. (If it's a windy day, the berries "corral" themselves in one corner or the other.) Then the berries are pushed onto a pulley belt and brought up to a huge packing crate on top of a truck. The stray sticks and leaves are pulled out as the berries are going into the crate. Then the berries are hauled away to Ocean Spray stations for weighing and hopefully a Mega-Harvest!

Then...after all the work is done...it's cranberry harvest celebration dinner time! All the family members, workers, neighbors come over and enjoy a bountiful dinner of seafood and even some fabulous cranberry filled recipes!

On a side note...If you didn't know, I can help you sell or purchase a home in Long Beach, WA or anywhere in the United Staties. I have fabulous real estate agent friends all over the United States. Jill,

Reading your post about 'going down' to Longview, I had to laugh - so southern to say 'going down' even when you're going north!
