Top 10 ways to a great smelling home

Whether you are thinking of selling your home or not, it is always a good idea to keep it smelling pleasant. Here is my list of top 10 ways to achieve this:

•1.       Put a few drops on the air filter in your furnace. The air will now have your scent of choice, and is an instant solution for the whole home.

•2.       Put on a pot of filtered coffee. This is great when there are those who may be allergic to perfumes. As there are many great flavours available, like hazelnut or vanilla, then you can enjoy a great tasting coffee as well as a great smelling home.

•3.       Invest in an air exchanger. Have your air circulated and exchanged with filtered air throughout the whole home. Great for those with allergies.

•4.       Use scented oil plug-ins, candles, or an oil burner. There are so many scents and designs to choose from that you will get something that smells good, and looks good in your home.

•5.       Use scented water in your floor steamer. Most popular would be the same ‘linen water' that is delicately scented. This would give a fresh scent when steaming your floors.

•6.       Clean your home on a regular basis, and open windows to air out stale smells. Probably the most cost effective way to a great smelling home.

•7.       If you have pets then wash their ‘toys' and pet bed. It is surprising that we sometimes forget that these items retain smells.

•8.       Clean out the fridge and freezer on a regular basis. We sometimes miss that rotten food item, and wonder where and what that strange smell is.

•9.       If you are a smoker then try smoking outside your home. Smoke smells seem to cling to furniture, walls, and remain in the air. You will notice a huge difference.

•10.   Empty the garbage every day. If you have garbage in the kitchen cupboard, then the smell of rotting food will start emerging after just one day of disposal. Pop that garbage into your outdoor bin.

Hope this gives you some good ideas. Let me know if I have missed anything!

I would love to learn some tips on how to get the smell of smoke  or moth balls out of a house.

Thanks for the comments!

An - I have found that smoke and mothball smells are probably the worst to try to mask. I have been reduced to re-painting walls and ceilings, and cleaning drapes and flooring to get rid of the smell. Not a simple solution I'm afraid.

My wife and I love lavender and put it everywhere. I will put some in the vacuum. Sometimes, I'll close the bedroom with the vacuum on to fill the room with the lavender scent.

So true about allergies to perfumes ... coffee is a good idea ... ever try boiling cinnamon sticks? ... nice too.
