Part of the long Christmas weekend festivities was the long-awaited Donkey Derby. What fun! Sponsored by the Gentlemen of Jones (see one gentleman below), there were several events: adult races, children's races, buggy races, etc. My favorite was the ladies' race, because three of my friends participated.
Here, Melinda is raring to go - but the donkey isn't! She never made it out of the start gate the whole race!
Cathy is an old veteran. She raced last year....well, sort of. She fell off early and her donkey ran away! She got off to a great start this year......But not such a great finish.... that's her lying on the ground......

Cathy's friend, visiting St Croix for the first time, also participated. Looks easy enough, right? Wait! Come back here, donkey!

Even with their difficulties - both gals won ribbons in the derby! And are sporting some nice flesh wounds to boot! The food was good at the derby too - hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, beer. All that was missing was pizza - and we stopped at the Lost Dog and had that for dinner. Clearly I will be going on a diet in 2010!
I bet not many of you reading this had as much fun on Dec. 27 - maybe good times with friends and family, and good food, but a Donkey Derby? If you did, write a comment below and we'll compare.

Good evening Kim,
This donkey race sounds like a lot of fun for all of those involved. I can only imagine the laughs that were had by all.
