Facebook Notes catches the wave... adds Images

Before Christmas, I blogged about a great Facebook App I started using: RSS Graffiti.  While I am still quite happy with it, and the responses I have been receiving from the Developers, I did find a new announcement this morning. According to Allfacebook, Facebook Notes Application will now start including Images.

Facebook Notes App Starts Importing Images

So, I quickly ran over to my profile and adjusted the Notes Application to Import my Active Rain Blog, and temporarily suspend my RSS Graffiti so I could see what was going on.  Immediately, my blog from yesterday was posted to my profile.

Not bad... It grabbed the picture I would have selected, and left off my digital signature pics, and the header pic.

[Make sure you go to Settings - Application Settings - and edit the Settings for Notes to set your proper security settings and if you want the Notes to be published to your Streams.  I have my security settings set for Friends and Networks, excluding members of my Competition group.]

Now, right off the bat, I see a problem:  and that is, the above post has appeared three times on my Wall. And I do not see any settings to adjust to prevent duplication.  There were three comments on this post, so I wonder if the comments are updating the RSS feed.  This would be bad...

So, while this does not appear to be a final solution, I am going to play with Notes on my Personal Page, but continue using RSS Graffiti on The Stage Coach's Fan page.

Let me know if you're able to get this to work for your pages!

Michael, this is a great App.  I added it as well and it works wonderfully.  Thanks for the original post.

Dear Micahel,

Please note that in this particular blog post you used as a "demo" for Notes. RSS Graffiti did pick and displayed the exact same image. Please do the same test for other blog posts where you believe RSS Graffiti picks the wrong image. You will probably notice that RSS Graffiti indeed does a selection and rejects images that look like buttons or banners whereas Notes picks the first images anyway.

Please also note that unlike Notes application, RSS Graffiti publishes a story on your wall pointing directly to your original article, where as Notes imports (copies) your original story into the Notes application and then publishes a story on your wall about your newly created (imported) Note. I find this difference fundamental. The hyper-links created by RSS Graffiti point directly to your original story (thus driving traffic to your sites, whereas the hyper-links created by Notes application point to the imported Note in Facebook which forces the visitor to read a badly formated copy of your original content inside Facebook giving them a bad impression on the content and keeping them from directly accessing your site.

Unless this is what you are looking for, I think there is no comparison whatsoever between Facebook's Notes application and RSS Graffiti. They are built for completely different purposes although some users might think of using them for the same one. One of the reasons we started RSS Graffiti was that Notes was not good enough for what we wanted to do: promote our external sites through Facebook News Feeds and the Stream API.

Thanks for devoting so much time in evaluating our software and making suggestion on its improvement. We will talk more about it as we improve things in RSS Graffiti and specially about the media part that concerns you more the past few days.

Best regards,

Yannis

Quick update:  do to the Facebook Notes Application posting duplicates to my Feed, and posting 9 in a row, I have discontinued using it for adding content to my Feed.

You may notice that Yannis, one of the developers of RSS Graffiti which I mentioned from an earlier blog, stopped by to speak to the benefits of their product vs. the Facebook Application.  He raises some good points, but the point that set off bells and whistles was:

"...unlike Notes application, RSS Graffiti publishes a story on your wall pointing directly to your original article, where as Notes imports (copies) your original story into the Notes application and then publishes a story on your wall about your newly created (imported) Note. I find this difference fundamental. The hyper-links created by RSS Graffiti point directly to your original story (thus driving traffic to your sites, whereas the hyper-links created by Notes application point to the imported Note in Facebook which forces the visitor to read a badly formated copy of your original content inside Facebook giving them a bad impression on the content and keeping them from directly accessing your site..."

That was the deciding factor for me in abandoning the Facebook Notes Application.

Check out RSS Graffiti and expect more great features from these guys!  And visit my older blog to see more positive comments about this Application. [so far, this blog has been re-posted 4x times!  Personal best for me!]
