New years resolutions or Goal setting?

Happy New Year Ottawa 2011It's that time of year again!? With only 1 day left until we countdown to 2011 it's only normal to start thinking about making and keeping a new year's resolution. Unfortunately it only takes a short time to discover that your good intentions fall by the wayside - "A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.".

The top new year's resolutions rarely change from year to year, and in case you haven't noticed, resolution are not on your side. If you select an unrealistic resolution you are almost doomed to fail right from the start; usually due to lack of motivation, not being specific enough, being too ambitious, bringing on stress, anxiety and even depression! Below you'll find the TOP 5 New Year's Resolutions:

     1- Lose weight
     2- Manage debt/Save money
     3- Get a better job
4- Spend more time with family
     5- Quit smoking

I have a thought to share with you now... this year... instead of deciding on your New year's resolution why not focus on goal setting! Whether it be personal or business goal setting; the process allows you to work towards your objectives in a specific time frame. What are your goals to set? Are they short term, long term or both? Are they personal goals, career goals or vague life goals? Goals give us direction and tell us what needs to be accomplished - short term goals, however, have the greatest motivational effects for change.

One last tip when goal setting for 2011... Write down and track your goals. Try and select S.M.A.R.T Goals, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Instead of jumping on the new year's resolution bandwagon this year, set goals that can be accomplished once and for all.

HAPPY NEW YEARS and continued love, happiness and success in 2011! www.christianelafleur.com

Gym owners and health clubs get a lot of calls the first of the year. Live longer healthier by making time for physical health and take a break, vacation for your mental outlook with the kids on a camping trip, ski outing, trip complete with pictures of the experience to put on the fridge and remember. Good post!

Hi Christiane,

I like what you have to say about writing down and tracking your goals. I've actually found in my own life, and with the agents I coach, that setting "promises" is a thousand times more effective than setting goals. Everyone who reads this, including myself, has failed to accomplish a lot of goals over the course of our life. But how many of us have let down our promises to ourself? If we truly have personal integrity and a desire to improve, we always accomplish our promises. I would suggest dropping the out-dated method of setting goals and urge you to learn how to set promises that will actually affect your life. I just posted about this recently...if you want to have a look click here. Hope this helps! Thank you,
