Saving Christmas~ Reducing Trash...

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Windermere Peninsula Properties

Everyone loves to see a tree with piles of presents underneath. Most of us can agree that it is better to give than receive...that is until it is time to clean up. All of those gift come with a lot of packaging and a lot of wrapping. This can lead to a lot of trash..literally TONS of it!

So what can we do next year to reduce some of this and still enjoy mountains of gifts? We can be selective when we purchase wrapping paper. If it feels like paper you can recycle it if is resembles foil it is garbage. Bags are a great alternative and like bows and ribbons can even be reused. There are a lot of great ways to make a big difference and make clean up quick and easy.

I have provided a link to your local area in Western Washington when you can find even more great info.

What a perfect time of year to bring up this topic. It is so important to recycle the packaging =)

Our presents are about 75% bags.  Some of the bags have been reused 6-7 times already.  We were just laughing about that this Christmas!

Good that you are bringing attention to this as it is important that we all pitch in to do what we can.  We recycle all of our wrapping materials and are happy to do it.  Our entire family takes part in the recycling every day and we believe that it is important for us to teach our children its importance.  Have a Happy New Year and best wishes for 2010!

Great tips and links, Dinah, for how to recycle all this stuff!  We have a Treecycling Program here in Wake Forest - trees are picked up, ground up and the mulch is free to residents!  Pretty cool, huh?

Dinah Lee, my sister-in-law sews bags for presents out of Christmassy material. These are used year after year.

Great post Dinah.  I try to recycle as many boxes as possible for the following year.  My wife thinks I'm crazy, but hey; we each need to do our part!!!!

This year I was very picky about breaking down boxes and folding bags for use next year as we opened gifts.  I was a lot less stressed, but it probably drove everyone else crazy!  Trash day was not nearly the mess we usually have.

Happy New Year!

Here is another idea for a green X-mas or Haunaka. Wrap the presents in a cloth bag with a drawstring. You can use some festive fabric for the holiday of your choice and simply sew one line add string or ribbon and your done. Next years wrap is a snap and you can use it over and over again!

Dear Will,

I have reused those darn gift bags so many times my husband always used to laugh at me. "Thats not saving any money". We have a large family so I have about 51 gifts to wrap for family only plus a few friends. The cost of giftwrap adds to the budget significantly. When he realized the price of gift wrap and knows that I have not purchased any in about 4 years he was impressed!
